It's happened to me too. I notice gliches on tv that must be on the source
material, not artifacts of transmission. The guy I showed it to and asked
about the dropouts was a graphic artist. He's a step of from the average joe
when judging visual quality, but not a broadcast person. What really shocks me
more than anything else is the degredation I see when I switch my monitor input
from S-Video to composite. By the time it gets to VHS it's even worse.

Just a tip: Avoid reds and oranges in composite video graphics. Make your
copies through a Time Base Corrector with a built in Proc amp. This will
reduce the chroma dot craw and other artifacts of composite video.

What the heck is a "Time Base Corrector with a built in Proc amp."? Is it a
black box that goes in the path? How much do they cost? Where can I get one?
Can I use it when making copies from my EVO-9650 to my consumer VHS deck? Or
do I need a more deluxe vhs deck?

TBC is used to correct minor imperfections in the playback of video from the
less than perfect sync generated by the motor driving the head of the playback
VCR. The proc amp will allow you to adjust thr black level, the white level,
the burst phase, and chroma saturation level of the video signal. A TBC + Proc
amp should always be used with monitoring equipment(waveform and vectorscope).
The TBC will aid in the quality of a VHS dupe. You can buy one as a card that
uses a slot in your PC. Check the classifieds in desktop video pubs. A TBC
must always be used to stabilize video during frame grabbing for rotoscoping
otherwise the grabbed frame will be distorted.
