#NEC 74 CD-ROM Drive?

Anybody have experience with the NEC 74 CD-ROM drive?
It seems to meet my requirements for a dual-spin, multi-session, Photo-CD
compatible drive for a Mac, in the $650-750 price range.
And, Tiger Software is offering it bundled with the Miracle Piano and 10 CDs
(at least 5 of which are of interest to me) for $999.
And, I'm told it can also be used on a 486 PC clone, if I order the appropriate
board.
Would you buy this drive, which lists for $725? If not, what would you buy
instead, if your primary interest were Photo-CD, and you wanted to use the
drive with a Mac or a Dell PC clone?

Only the latest version of the NEC-74 called the NEC 74-1 supports multisession
Photo CD. I'd verify that that is what you are getting. Otherwise I think it's
a good drive. There are faster drives available, but I'm not sure about MAC
support.
74-1? I've not seen "74-1" nor "74i" (which someone mentioned) in any of the
adds for the NEC drive. Just "NEC MultiSpin CDR-74". But, I'll try to make
sure I get the latest model/modification, of course. If it's not multisession,
I'll find out after the 2nd roll of film. <g>
The bare unit prices for the NEC 74 seem to be in the $615-630 range. ClubMac:
$619, Mac & PC USA: $625, Memory Direct: $629
The $500 type prices seem to be for other drives: $498 for a Toshiba 3401 and
$448 for a Texcel DM-3024 at Direct Connections
Do these have the Mac connection stuff included — I don't know.
I'd feel comfortable in going with any of the "name-brand" DS/MS/PCD drives,
but will probably opt for NEC 74 in the Tiger Software bundle (assuming they
assure me it is a 74-1).
