#Bizarre Tosh 3401 prob

I have a weird problem that I'm hoping somebody can help me understand. I just
bought a Toshiba 3401 external CD-ROM drive. It's the only device being driven
by a Corel SCSI controller (my two hard disks are both ESDI). The CD-ROM works
fine — once it's warmed up. When I first power up my machine, the Corel
doesn't recognize it. The machine hangs for a moment while the controller
tries to get a response from the drive, then continues through the rest of the
boot sequence. When I attempt to do a directory listing of the CD-ROM drive, I
get a not ready reading drive error. However, four or five minutes later,
everything is suddenly just fine, and it stays fine through the rest of the
session. It's as if the Toshiba needs to warm up before it'll talk to the
computer. And if I power everything down and turn it right back on again, the
Toshiba is on-line immediately with no waiting period.
What gives? Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

Do you have the power turned on the Toshiba before you turn on the computer? It
takes the Toshiba a little time to boot up and read the disc. You should find
the same thing happen when you change CD and try to run the program or do a
directory before the drive has finished reading the boot track and table of
contents.
Yeah, I start the Toshiba first. But it still takes a good five minutes before
my computer is able to talk to the drive…. I don't think I should have to
fire it up that far in advance!

That does sound like an abnormally long wait. You might want to have your
drive tested. What version of CorelSCSI drivers are you using? (1.2 is the
latest, and is available as a free upgrade if you don't have it yet, although I
don't think the drivers have anything to do with the problem you're
encountering…)
