#Anything new in sight?

Well, the rumor mill is quite active in creating the end of Commodore. In
contrast, does anyone know what the potential next products will be? I
know that WB 4.0 and the AAA chipset is over a year away, but is CBM
making any new CDTV, CD-ROM drives, or any other new and exciting things.
I hope Passadena brings as good of news this year as it did last. That is
where the next WOA is right?

Do you know if the AAA chipset will be coupled with a RISC processor? That
would put some serious pressure on the other guys, or are they up to that point
already? It seems that C= started the Amiga out right, lots of power and speed
that the other companies weren't really close to. Now they've fallen off the
pace and thus always playing catch-up with companies that Amiga should be well
ahead of. Take for instance the Atari Falcon, sure it's just an expensive
toilet plunger but it's got the built in MIDI support. Amiga? Still no DSP
and no MIDI. Now then what's this Acorn thing they got over in jolly 'ole
England? I hear it's RISC based, and getting to be quite popular in the field
of education. So I can see why netrunners are spreading the doom and gloom of
C='s demise. I only hope that, as you said, the next WOA brings not just us
Amiga users, but the whole computer industry, good news and awe inspireing
power.

Hi Craig. I hope C= does something like you suggest also, but I fear they
won't be able to port the O.S. quickly to RISC. I agree with your assessment
of what has happened. As for Atari's built in MIDI though, I don't exactly
consider that a great feat. With MIDI interfaces going for around $30-$40,
they rank up there with RF modulators in terms of technology. A DSP on the
other hand… most useful. That's why Apple's next wave of machines will
apparently all have them on the motherboard.
The latest rumor going around is that CBM is going to release a surprise in the
CD-ROM arena… CDTV II? CD in an Amiga? I don't know, I was just told
sometime this summer and it will be a surprise to the market.

The July issue of Britian's Amiga Mart magazine has a article about the new
A-5000 which CBM will announce in July. It even had pictures. I have heard hoax
but also talked with someone who got cut on "Black Friday" that it was close to
completion. With the recent round of layoffs in CATS and R&D I hope they are
not selling away the future.
I'd like to discuss this sometime.

Well, I for one am looking forward to WOA in the fall. I have a feeling
that C= isn't quite ready to lie down and die. Mabe we'll see a new CDTV
or an Amiga 1400. Guess we just have to wait and see.

AAA will be set up with RISC but not right away though. Be careful 'cause
it's going to be VERY pricey. They are commited to the two-class system.
Epensive "Professional Series" and the "Home Market" machine.
It's going to take a while though, but it will be refreshing.

Wasn't there a major hint of the Amiga running on a RISC processor
by calling it "RISC ready" in the near future at a WOA speech a little
while ago?

Acorn's RISC computer, the Archimedes, has been around a long time. Nice,
fast, machine, but it's virtually unknown outside the U.K. It is popular
in the schools because it is the successor to the BBC computer (also built
by Acorn), which had a virtual stranglehold on the education market.

Tom,
I was a bit embarrassed to see that article on the A5000 on the front
cover of Amiga Mart, since I occasionally provide articles for said
magazine. The magazine seems to have used the piece that came up here in
the AmigaUser Forum at the end of April(it's virtually word for word),
which I questioned as being a late April Fool joke, and which was also
dismissed as wishful thinking by several others.
Please forgive me for not understanding your comment after your signature,
as I have a terrible memory for names. Can you jog my memory?
