Alex: I am a 3DS dealer in Austin, Texas. I don't sell hardware, but my clients ask me for hardware recommendations. I have a client that wants to know about the ATI Ultra Graphics Pro cards suitability for 3DS and AutoCAD. How has this card worked for you? Can you do hires rendering replays from within 3DS? Who do you get your driver upgrades from? How has ATI been for tech support? I appreciate any feedback you have time to give us! Lansing: I use an ATI Graphics Ultra Plus (2 Megs DRAM) in a 486/66 ISA system with the included Vibrant drivers for 3DS 2.01 and ACAD 12. Both, the 'plus' and the 'pro' have the same Mach32 chip. – ATI board and the Vibrant drivers work together very fine and stable. – Performance in Autocad is no question… – In 3DS, you can choose seperately main display, rendering display and material editor resolution and color depth: the rendering display up to 800x600x24bit works fine. – I got driver upgrades from CIS (I live in Switzerland….) or from one of the ATI BBS. – The main problem with ATI was in delivering the boards before they had a good Windows driver. Still the ATI tech support has too much work to do: drivers for OS2, Windows NT, local bus boards, etc…. – Today, they have a good Windows driver (24bit in 800×600, 16bit in 1024×768) and a VESA driver that does 16bit in 1024×768. My conclusion: For 3DS and ACAD a very good choice with the Vibrant drivers for the price! (ATI should deliver the DL-Xpress v2.15 with new boards that solve the minor problem of the colored icons in 3DS.) Hope that helps……………..Alex.
