I downloaded the Quarterback Tools 2.0.1 update and installed it. When I try to run it, a requestor appears asking for my serial number. The Okay button is not active. I can fill in my name and serial number but cannot use the okay button. The only button that works is the cancel button. I cannot access my Tools program. Anyone else report this trouble?

Yes, I have the same problem. The OK button remains ghosted. I tried every possible combination for the serial number- 201 with a space before the rest of the number, with a dash between 201 and the serial, with all the numbers together with no spaces, but nothing will work. Don …via AutoPilot

Don't people ever test their stuff before uploading to the forum? I guess that would be too easy.
#59196From: Central Coast SoftwareJun 21, 1993 11:04 AM
Robert, Yes, we do test things before they are ever uploaded. Please see my previous messages (or read the "Read_This" file that came with the updater) for info on how to correctly enter the serial number. James Bayless Central Coast Software A division of New Horizons Software, Inc.

The "Read_This" file states: Quarterback Tools 2.0.1 now requests your serial number the first time you run it. The serial number can be found on the back of your original Quarterback Tools Deluxe disk, with the change that THE FIRST THREE DIGITS MUST BE 201 RATHER THAN 200. This is misleading because it does not say anything about a period being necessary. Also the number on my disk has a period and then a space which failed as entered exactly. It pays to be very specific when giving directions and nothing beats an example line.
#59195From: Central Coast SoftwareJun 21, 1993 11:04 AM
Don, The correct format for the serial number is "201.xxxxx" where "xxxxx" is the number on back of your original QTD disk–the part after the "200." In other words, the serial number you must enter must be exactly like the number on back of your master disk with the single change of having it start with "201." rather than "200.". I'm having the same problem Robert. Something is up with the patch. \*donovan*\

Gee DonovaN, the patch worked OK for me; but then I'm the one who is having the weird memory problems we're trying to track down. I did the patch update in ram then moved it over to the hard drive just like others have mentioned. Interesting….

All I can say is, CENTRAL COAST, WHERE ARE YOU?

I had a different problem with the QBTools update. It only updated one of the programs. With the rest it said they weren't the correct version and didn't update them. It's one thing that CCS has either uploaded a bad patch or incorrect/incomplete docs. But it's very annoying that they make us wait days to respond to our problems. It's as if they've taken the weekend off. Someone from CCS should log in here at least once a day.

Excuse me, I don't have the new QBT yet and I have no need for the update, but your one comment I just had to jump in and insert my 2cents. you said —> "It's as if they've taken the weekend off." Yes, alot of the folks here in AmigaVend take the weekend off. It's been that way for a long time now. I mean it's a job for them, they have the right and need to get away from things for a while and take the weekend off. I mean give them a break —> "Someone from CSS should log in here at least once a day" Do you know how ridiculous that sounds. The guys at CSS and New Hor. provide some of the best customer support in the Amiga industry and now you're asking for more. Might as well say they should be here 24 hours a day 7 days a week, just in case that one customer comes along at 3:00am on Sunday morning to ask a question. Come-on Dom, think about what you have asked. You know a little patience can go along way. Give these guys a break will ya – Today is Monday and I'm sure CSS will be along soon to start to straighten out all this mess with the new patch.

Yes, I agree that CSS and New Horizons do provide some of the best Amiga customer support. And I agree that they certainly do need time off. However, logging in once on Saturday and once on Sunday is not that big a deal. Many, many vendors in other forums do check in at least once a day, weekends included. > Do you know how ridiculous that sounds. Leaving remarks like that is certainly no way to make friends. Feel free to join the thread, but my remarks were not directed at you. If you disagree with a remark I make to someone else, maybe you should learn how to express your opinion without characterizing my remarks as "ridiculous." Furthermore, my request is not ridiculous. As I said, many, many vendors do check in 7 days a week, so why should a request for a 5 day a week vendor to follow suit be considered ridiculous? Actually, your remark that my asking a vendor to check in once on Saturday and Sunday is tantamount to asking them to have an online presence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is ridiculous. How could you fail to see that there is a major difference between my request and your statement? Please don't say my request is the same as your absurd example just to make my request sound ridiculous. There is a difference, and if checking in 7 days a week is so ridiculous, then why do so many vendors, both in and out of this forum, do it?
#59264From: Roy PahnkeJun 22, 1993 10:26 AM
I'm sorry if I upset you – but I stand by my comment. There are still many vendors who only use this forum Monday thru Friday. CIS provides an avenue for vendors to give better customer support to their users, however it is just a job for most of the reps who provide that support. They all have a life outside of their support services. Sure it is great to have them here and it is an excellent means to provide said support, but 99.5% of the time there is no computer problem that can't wait for normal business hours to solve. There really is NO need for them to sign on 7 days a week just to check for users who are having problems. Those that do, probably do so because they enjoy using CIS as much as you and I do – and they are probably also checking out other areas of the board for the own enjoyment and just happen to ckeck their Vendor area. Also just because they do does not mean that they do so every weekend and chances are the weekend that you need them will be the one when they don't sign on. So, relax, chill out, shut the computer off for the weekend, and most importantly – HAVE PATIENCE. Help from the vendors will be here, just not alway when YOU want it.

Roy, I'm not upset at all. I just don't think my comments were ridiculous. 😎 Dom Fontana –> Sent from NY via AP <–

Although some of us do check in a lot, I'll just turn the question around to you… do *you* show up at your job seven days a week?

Never mind him, he gets like this once in a while. I think it's a different sense of reality. It is difficult to hold back though.

>>It's as if they've taken the weekend off. Dominick, While all of us here at New Horizons/Central Coast are Amiga fans, we do not work on weekends. We log in here every single _weekday_ and answer questions as quickly as we can. Yours is the first I've heard of the updater not updating every program. Try re-installing from your original program disks and applying the update again–the only reason the updater should refuse to update a program is if the program size is incorrect (you don't have any viruses that have infected your programs, do you? This would change the program size.).

Note that some folks use Powerpacker or Imploder to crunch their executables, then forget that little fact when they try to patch in an update. It's worth mentioning in upgrade docs that this won't work, as a reminder. — Ron Legro, Milwaukee via AUTOPILOT (the only way to fly)

Thanks for your response. I do think CCS and New Horizons provide great support. I also understand that you don't work weekends and I respect your decision not to log in on weekends. I just mentioned it because many vendors also don't work on weekends, yet they log in 7 days a week. In other words, having one person log in once on Saturday and once on Sunday is still considered having the weekend off. 😎 Most of these vendors have someone log in from home on the weekends, especially since the vendor account is free. Also, it's best to avoid the situation where someone from your company logs in early Friday morning then doesn't log in again until late Monday. Even though you only technically didn't log in over the weekend, it can effectively seem like 4 days that you haven't logged in. A user who leaves a question early on Friday, but after you've logged in, might not receive an answer until Tuesday. It's probably best to check the forum before you leave on Friday and then as soon as you get in on Monday. It's just a suggestion. I run a virus checking program and I have no viruses that I am aware of. I will try updating the original programs on disk and let you know how it comes out. Thanks for your help. If, like me, you have the utilities in a subdir of the dir where QBT is you must get all the proggrams into the same subdir, along with thepatch files. Then run it. After that move the patched files back to the respective places where you like to keep them.
#59257From: Dominick J. FontanaJun 22, 1993 9:34 AM
Thanks for the help, but I have QBT and the utilities all in the same directory, so I'm still working on the problem.
#59276From: New Horizons SoftwareJun 22, 1993 4:41 PM
Are you sure you haven't PowerPacked them? That would change the size and cause LPatch to reject the file.
#59416From: Dominick J. FontanaJun 25, 1993 5:48 AM
Randy, No, I didn't PowerPack them. I originally tried to use the patch with the files on my hard drive. Then when I used the patch on a backup floppy, it worked. The problem was the files are shipped with a space between the names. Three of the four files had a two word title. On my HD, I had taken the space out. That's why the only file that originally updated properly was the Replicator, because it was only one word. The backup floppy had the spaces so it worked. Everything is okay now. The patch worked perfectly when using the original file names. Thanks. Dom Fontana –> Sent from NY via AP <–

Robert, The format for the serial number is VER.NNNNN where the three digit version number (in this case 201) is separated from the five digit sequence nunmber by a period. The OK button will not be active until a valid number is entered. Randy Brooks Central Coast Software A division of New Horizons Software, Inc.
