Thanks to those who gave TBC info on stopping camera movement. Animated opacity map appears to be the ticket to showing oil flowing through semi=transparent piping. Thanks again. New question, have access to a Sony EVO-9800A. Am video ignorant, but have seen various messages on this forum recommending the EVO-9650 (think that's the right number – why is that the model numbers for electronics have to have more alphanumeric combinations than there are people on Earth?) and the Panasonic AG-7750. Is this 9800A usable for single frame animation recording??? Advice, help appreciated. Charles Yancey 70712,57

I have an EVO-9800 and it does not support frame accurate insert editing. The 9800A maybe different.

The 9800A does not support insert editing. It is frame accurate as a source vtr in an editing system. The 9850 is the next step and is frame accurate as a insert edit recorder for an editing system, but it also doesn't do single frame animation. Isn't SONY great. L

Larry…PMJI I see you're familiar with the Sony Hi 8 Stuff. I just left a new 3DS client today that showed me a 2 year old Sony EVO 9700. He uses this for his master Hi8 and goes out to four Panasonic AG1250's to make copies. What I need to know is, will his Sony EVO 9700 allow him to do single frame animation? If not how could he best utilize this machine in a 3DS environment? Thank you in advance. James M. Murphy

The best way to utilize the 9700, I guess would be to use it to record FLC or FLI files (animations) real time. There has also been some talk in the forum about the new Matrox compression board that allows for some real time recording as well. Regards, Larry

Thats what i was afraid of…no way to do single frame animation. Thanks Larry.

Yes Sony has a different machine for every technique. Other than source deck I can't see why anyone would want to do frame accurate editing with Hi8 anyway. Hi8 was originally intended for acquisition and as such specs were designed around that purpose.. Everyone demanded Sony convert the 8mm format for editing and now look at all the crippled editing systems we have. You buy a Hi8 editing deck and then you find out you can't do video follows audio. Audio follows video works but who edits that way?

Exactly, Hi 8 is simply not a good editing and animation format. It's good for camcorders and aquisition but if you want to do much after that as far as editing or any post production work there are some limitations (both in the available equipment and the format) for any frame accurate work. L

Do you have any experience with the drop out symptoms and headwear with Betacam SP metal tape? I've asked many people about this but only a few engineers have admitted there is a problem just as in Hi8 metal tape. It also shows up in MII.
