#QuarterBack 5.x
11 messages in this thread
Recently I purchased a used 250MB tape drive, and along with the
drive the person gave me his QuarterBack 5.0x (original disk and
manual). So first thing I need to do is get registered under my name.
I did purchase and register the original version of QuarterBack, but
never purchased the 5.0x upgrade.
Also, I do have a question on the buffer options of QB. If I set the
Memory Type: to Any, it still uses chip memory instead of fast. So even
with 2MB of chip, about 750K is the max I can set the Restore or Backup
buffer sizes.
And one other thing that I think you can do to improve the program is
come up with an easier way to do multiple backups. Although the 'Multiple
Backup' macro is usable, it would be a lot easier if QB just gave you a
list requester of all available volumes, and then you just clicked on what
volumes you would like to backup and in what order.

John,
Mail me the serial number and your full name and address information
as well as the name of the person that you purchased it from so that
we can reassign their registration to your name. As to buffer
options we look for 16 bit memory and if we can't find that we will
take the chip ram. On systems with 32 bit wide fast memory the effect
will be that we always ask for chip ram. As to max buffer size on
tape drives unless you are using compression or have a very slow
drive that underuns frequently (like the Tandberg) 32K has proven to
be the most effecient setting for the backup buffer.

Hey.. whats this about Tandberg being a slow drive! Mine averages 3.8 mb
per sec! 😉 Oh, and FYI, the fastest buffer setting for Tandberg tape
drives I have found is 512k.

Vern,
Well, 3.8 MB per second isn't bad, but our Touchdown-100 tape drives crank out
almost 6 MB per second. So relative to our drive, the Tandberg is "slow." 🙂

Hi, Vernon!
I get about 6.0 Megs per second with the WangTek 5150ES tape drive.

Randy,
Do you recommend 32K as the backup buffer for a WangTek 5150ES tape
drive?

Dom,
32K has shown to be the fastest choice when we were testing here at the
office. Rick has taken his WangTek drive home and I'll ask him what he is using
now with his wicked fast system that he has it installed on.

Randy,
Okay, please let me know if Rick still considers 32K to be the optimum
choice.
Thanks.

Dom,
OK will do. Rick is going to be out of pocket for a couple of days but I'll
post the answer as soon as I have it.
