The camcorder are just consumer grade equipment, therefore I would
guess that it does not have drop frame, right? I put standard SMPTE
timecode (non-drop frame) then inserted the video from the Hi8
camcorder onto the SVHS tape in the Panasonic AG7750. Shouldn't that
work?
Rick – If I read you correctly you stripped your SVHS tape with SMPTE
time code which is drop-frame unless you specified otherwise. The
consumer camcorder I'm assuming has the flash on it, as you are able
to see it, my thoughts were with regard to the AG7750 and in what
mode the SVHS tape was recorded. I think as a flash is fast, could be
just one frame, and if you were recording with drop- frame on the
AG7750, you would then lose it. The thing to do is an assemble edit
w/o time code (just control track) to test this theory, and then check
it frame by frame as you have. Also turn the TBC off and walk through
the tape with the Jog control letting each frame roll up (no Dynamic
Tracking.) Good Luck -JE

I did specify that the tape be stripped with Non-Drop-frame timecode.
The flash was from a still camera. I was probably 50 feet in front of the
camera and out of the FOV. I pointed the flash across the FOV at a moving
vehicle that also had a camera located inside. I needed to know a specific
point in time so that later I could tell what frame were taped at the same
time. This is all for a train accident that I'm working on for an attorney.

After grabbing the frames around the areas of the flash, I could see the flash
with no problem using Tips and viewing the frames on the Targa+. It was
defintely on just ONE field.

Rick – Interesting use of the flash, and fascinating that is only showed up on
ONE field. Should now be able to refine you technique, seems like a good
solution if you can extend the duration of the flash. -JE

fine, now that I can see the flash using the Targa+.

Rick – this missing frame thing has caught my curiousity, so I called an Editor
who works in Broadcast exclusively. No definitive answer but he said even if
the tape was time coded drop-frame your dub should have all the picture
information, in other words you wouldn't loose a frame in the transfer. What he
speculated might be the case is that the flash is happening at the field level,
so you've got a 50/50 chance of seeing it when searching for it frame by frame,
because actually in frame by frame you could be seeing it every other field. He
too thought it bizarre! -JE
