I've got some 3D CAD files in IGS format. I have converted them to DXF for use with 3-D Studio, but when I load the file into 3-D Studio, I am only getting bits and pieces of the original file. I've been told that there is no way to successfully convert an IGS file to DXF for use with 3-D Studio. Is this true? If so, do I have any other options?

>>> I've been told that there is no way to successfully convert an IGS file to DXF for use with 3-D Studio. Not true, I do it all the time. I import models created in AutoSurf via IGES into AutoCAD and then DXF out to 3ds. The main question here is: how are you converting to dxf from iges? Yann Bertaud – I.D.L. Autodesk.

Yann, I am using the conversion program which ships with Design Cad 3-D. I output to DXF and then bring this into 3-D Studio. When I convert from IGS to the Design Cad format, I have more success loading the wireframe into DesignCad, but I still can not shade it properly. When I load the dxf into 3-D Studio, the wireframe is more broken up then it is with Design Cad. So, either way I go, I loose. Any suggestions? Thanks. Jeff.

I hate to point my finger at other people, but I would say that you should talk to the people who make design cad 3d since you mention that even in design cad you are missing stuff and it is not shading properly. Can you tell us where the IGES file is coming from? IGES is a very complicated language, it's got quite a few intricacies. A lot of translators often do not totally translate surfaces. Even AutoCAD's built in translator doesn't understand surfaces very well. However, our new translator does an excellent job with surfaces. I've gotten some really beautiful meshes from it to bring into 3ds. Yann Bertaud – I.D.L. Autodesk.

Yann, I'll attempt to use Autocad's translator. The IGES file is a Pluto space probe which I'm using (or trying to use) in an animation. I don't have much disk space, however. I'll see what I can come up with and get back to you. Thanks much for all your help! Jeff.

Let me know what you come up with. Yann Bertaud – I.D.L. Autodesk.
