AAPLAY Dist. Question
9 messages in this thread
What are the limits of distribution of AAPLAY.DLL and MCIAAP.DRV? I know you
sell a development kit, so perhaps it is explained in there.
We write mainly programming toolkits, and we try to simplify the Windows API.
Can we include AAPLAY.DLL and/or MCIAAP.DRV, and provide our own interface to
them as part of our package?
We are simplifying the AVI interface, and wanted to do the same for Flics.
We're registered Autodesk developers, so I guess I could call the answer desk
(except that it is currently Midnight <g>).
Perhaps you could direct me to the appropriate person/place.
TIA!

Chris,
If you are distributing these files in a commercial application (as it sounds
you are) then you DO need a licence agreement with Autodesk. Contact Gail
Penner in the Multimedia Legal Department. She can be reached at 415-332-2344.
Yes, there is a developers kit. Call 800-879-4233 and ask for the Windows
Player Developers Kit for the Windows .DLL. It costs about $25.

PMJI.
Are you saying that even though I purchased the Developers Kit I STILL
don't have the right to distribute VBPlay.vbx and AAPlay.dll?!?!

Tim,
You don't have the right to distribute these files as part of a COMMERCIAL
application. In other words, if you are selling (in a store, via shareware,
whatever) your software package that includes our files, you need a licence
agreement from Autodesk. If you are distributing these files for free, you do
not. If you are not sure whether your application or means of distribution
requires a licence agreement, I reccomend calling Gail Penner. She is the legal
expert.

Thanks for the update. FYI Max Hoffman is the Senior Manager of Developer
Relations.

Dear Brian:
Is this also the case for the DOS FLC libraries? Or have these been released
from
this….

ps… I'll try calling legal… jsut thought you might be able to answer
quickly….

Mark,
You'll have to be more specific. Exactly which files are you talking about?
Give me specifics and I can let you know the distribution requirements.
-Brian
P.S. For the most part, it is the same answer for anything that Autodesk has
released as freely distributable to the public. If you are distributing it to
show your own work done with Autodesk products, no problem. If you are
distributing something as part of a commercial application, you need a licence
agreement.
That is a general rule of thumb, but of course you should check specific cases
with the legal dept.
