#3D-Studio needs AutoCAD?

I have recently placed an international order for 3D-Studio (I live in
Belgium). I would like to use it mainly as renderer for animations which I
would incorporate in a Windows game (using the soon-to-be-released WinG
library). However, I received a fax from my dealer informing me that I need
AutoCAD in order to get 3D-Studio. Can someone please confirm this (AutoDesk,
Yost Group, Greg Pyros, anyone…)? I already have Inside 3D studio, which I
enjoy a lot (still reading) and it says on page 7 If you do not own AutoCAD,
this chapter will help you…. That seems to suggest 3D-Studio is a stand-alone
product. Frankly, Im confused.
Im a small developer, and spending around $3,000 for AutoCAD to be able to run
3D-Studio (also around $3,000) is a pretty heavy burden. I guess 3D-Studio is
worth it, but if I can spare an extra $3,000, who will blame me ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do NOT need ACAD to run 3DS.

It's not clear to me from what you said why you would be told that. 3D Studio
users very often know about AutoCAD, but there are lots of 3D Studio users who
have never heard of AutoCAD. 3D Studio is independent of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD can create 3D objects which can be read into 3D Studio. One reason
people might like to use AutoCAD is that it is geared to create very precises
tolerances in its drawings. Architects would use AutoCAD and the MANY add-on
packages to easily design buildings to code. They might then export the model
into 3D Studio for rendering and animation.
3D Studio does not emphasize the "+/- .0001" tolerances while drawing – it's
interested in appearance and animation! You can create architectural
structures completely within 3D Studio if you wanted to. There just wouldn't
be any dimensioning features, etc., that AutoCAD provides.

I think his dealer needs a few extra bucks! ouch, telling him he needs AutoCad
to run 3ds …. hmmm!

As Jonas says, AutoCAD is certainly not required. 3DS has its own modeler
which is quite robust for doing animation projects.
Please tell your dealer that he's extremly misinformed.

Sounds like your being taken for a ride. If your buying from the states watch
out (though you should be covered by VISA). 3D Studio is a standalone product
and does not require AutoCad at all. Though I am told it builds meshes better.
Do like the students do here in Montreal, go to school part time, and get a
student version of 3d-Studio for 850 $ Canadian. — Work this out, pretty cheap
in American bucks, at 37$ on 100$ ouch!, great deal for the C.E.G.E.P.S. and
univerisities.

Hi there,
well … a friend of mine called an Authourized dealer in Montreal, and this is
the price for students, you need of course proof that you are in school. —
Quick note, recently a truck of Autodesk products was hijacked, and there was a
copy of Autocad being sold here in Montreal, … my friend then called
Autodesk, and they told her NOT to buy the package, even though it was a real
version. .. She then talked about the truck, and the theft of the software. It
seems this was one of those actual packages. Small world eh! … I don't know
if she called the 1-800 number, or a Montreal (514) number. Hmm, I'll have to
ask her, the next time I see her.

I'll ask them if they can order a student adition of 3DS.. it would
