Need help w/Vibrant

Hi, Chuck. My name is Jan MacKay, and I am the Tech Support Supervisor for
Addison-Wesley Publishing, Inc. We sell 3D Studio R3 through college
bookstores. I need some info/advice concerning the Vibrant driver in 3DS3.
A recent purchaser has a Diamond Viper board installed in his computer.
Following Diamond's suggestion, he has selected the Vibrant option, and chosen
the Diamond P9000 board during vibcfg, using 1024×768 resolution for main,
rendering, and materials. He says that the display is fine in main and
materials, but distorted in rendering. He did contact Vibrant, who says that
he needs to contact the software developer. I'm sure you're familiar with
Autodesk's support policy.
Because our agreement with Autodesk is to render BASIC installation support
only (not configuration), I'm really at a loss at how to proceed. Do you have
any suggestions for this user?
Is the vibcfg program an add-in to 3D Studio, or did Autodesk develop it?
I'd truly appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thanks.
Jan
Jan,
<<. He says that the display is fine in main and materials, but distorted in
rendering.>>
How is it distorted? Is it stretched or squashed, or do the rendered images
contain scan lines or "video noise" that should not be there at all? If the
problem is stretching or squashing, then most likely your client has his aspect
ratio set wrong when rendering. If it is lines or noise, we will have to check
with Vobrant to see if there are any known problems with the driver.
<<Is the vibcfg program an add-in to 3D Studio, or did Autodesk develop it?>>
The VIBCFG funtion is built into 3D Studio, and is the tool for configuring 3DS
for use with your video card. At the DOS prompt, switch to the 3DS directory
and type "3DS VIBCFG". This will take you into the Vibrant configuration menu.
From there users can select their particular video card for each module, from
the list of supported cards. Also there is a video test function to check
whether the card are working, prior to starting 3D Studio.
Hope this helps.

I am not clear what you mean by 'distorted'? I assume that you are using a 256
color device for all devices… You should use a 256 color for main, but a
hi/true-color for materials and rendering is best… The P9000 does support
24-bit color.
There is no difference in our code for render vs. main vs. materials, so I
don't understand why it would cause a problem. Please try with some other
resolutions and see if the problem continues to show itself. If so, please
send your 3DS.SET file to me (preferable ZIPd…).
