#3ds Import Problem

I have posed this question on Amiga boards and was wondering if you had any ideas. I'm having a problem I haven't had before. It involves importing a 3DS ver 3 file into LightWave. The file is in .3ds format is 1.5mb in size has 37541 vertices with 70078 faces. When imported into LW everything except one small building comes through as points. In LW modeler I can see the complete plant (it is a power station) made of points. It is too complex to grab the points and turn them into polys not to mention time consuming. When the import is happening it seems to take all the objects it goes through each one states number of points and triangles. When it is complete it shows 37541 points and 4542 polygons. Again everything except one small part are points. Any ideas??

try breaking it into 2 or 3 smaller files for import. number of faces can sometimes cause problems it seems, this might be one.

Thx Gary I'll give it a try. I have other responses in Amiga areas that concur your assumption. thx jmb

My company wrote the 3DS import filter that's in LightWave. This "TIO" import mechanism is limited to importing single LightWave objects (not hierarchical scenes) so therefore you're limited to importing 3DS files that contain less than 64K triangles total (that is, the sum of the number of triangles in all 3DS sub-objects must total less than 65,535.) Instead, you might buy my company's standalone translator, known as InterChange. It can translate the 3DS file to a LightWave scene, meaning each 3DS sub-object becomes a separate LightWave object, and we also write a LightWave scene file that links all the sub-objects together. Call (414) 674-5200 for more info.

John, Thx for the info. I have heard of InterChange but thought it was like Pix3d and not for importing other files like 3DS. Guess I was mistaken. I would be very interested if it can make this part easier. I work for an engineering company and most of the plant models I use have to be imported from 3DS because that is what they are rendered on first if they don't need a video of it. If they include it in a video then I have to import and animate in LW. We are in the process of getting a PAR for the PC but I still would be interested in your product. Please mail info w/pricing to me at 11401 Lamar, Overland Park, KS 66211. Thx again and for now I'm going to bust it up into sections to import but I wish it would import each object as an object because the only way to seperate with TIO is by color.

InterChange doesn't autotrace bitmaps like Pixel did. (I think they're out of business, or at least on the skids these days.) InterChange does one thing very well: convert between 3D file formats. Send me your postal address in private e-mail, and I'll send you literature. Whoops, you already did that. 🙂 A flyer will go out to you today. Any other conversion questions, I'd be glad to help you here or in the Syndesis section in the Amiga vendor forum.
