Screen "line" flickering

PROBLEM:
Flic – flickers when played.
What does the flic consist of ?
========================
It is a font created in 3d studio consisting of some 5 letters as one object.
The CAMERA
then moves partly around the font and then zooms out over 70 frames. Red Metal
was
the material assigned to the object. The flic is just 2 MB in size.
There are three omni lights and two spotlights with shadowing enabled.
What are the RENDER settings ?
===========================
The background is a blue-black vertical grad. gif file created in ANI PRO.
All default settings were used at 640 * 480 256 colors
What hardware is in use ?
=====================
66 MHZ 486, ATI 16 Ultra Pro 16 bit color card with 2MB
What actually happens ?
====================
Thin lines appear to flicker across the RED LETTERS and the letters at either
end,
particularly, move in a jagged manner.
What checks and modifications were made to correct the problem ?
==============================================
1. A Medium followed by High palette were used while rendering.
2. The spot lights were eliminated.
3. DITHERING in the RENDER CONFIGURE sections were disabled.
4. The VIBRANT driver was set to 65,000 colors and the "DEFAULT" button then
clicked under RENDER – OPTIONS
5. The flic was run on another slower computer with a PARADISE video card and
different overall hardware.
6. The video color check was enabled
7. The flic was run in ANIMATOR PRO VER 1.3
8. The flic was then slowly played at 2 frames a second from 30 frames a
second and the
flicker was still noticeable.
9. The flic was run using the Windows Ani Player
10. In the CMOS register, FAST VIDEO RAM was set to ON and then OFF.
None of the above changes made the slightest difference and I have run out of
ideas.

I would sincerely appreciate your assistance.
Thank you.
Could it be a pallete problem. That is are you getting pallete changes between
frames. Try low or a custom pallete. Hard to tell with out seeing the
animation.
Peter Watje.
Thanks for the suggestion.
However, I checked in ANIMATOR PRO using the "ONE PALETTE" option and the
problem persisted.
With some help form AEC Technologies, the problem is the speed of my video
card. Apparently the fastest ATI 16 BIT 2 MB Ultra Pro is just not fast enough
and to alleviate the flicker, I shall have to go for a 32 bit local bus job or
use 5 times the number of frames so that the steps are closer and the flicker
not so obvious.
Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

Another alternative to displaying flics on slow systems/video cards is to use a
video compressor. See SMACKP.exe and NEWAGE.zip in the Utilities section of the
lib.
Play the provided DINO.NI and DINO.SMK with these utilities found in Utilites
and 3D Studio sections respectively.
These utilities will compress a flic to 1/4 to 1/8 of their original size. In
addition, Smacker allows for play back speeds of up to 30 frames per second or
faster without hardware assistance.

Thank you very much for your detailed response – I shall try it now.
With sincere appreciation.

Kinda catching it on the tail end. But if your going to upgrade you video and
bus, I
HIGHLY reccomend the ATI Mach 32 PCI. No vibrant for the 64 yet (as far as I
know… ) The ATI cards are very smooth both in construction and playback. I am
very pleased with mine. If you run ACAD for Windoze, the ATI 64 leaves a little
to be desired, but it blazes through everything else.
I am about to order a couple of Gateway Pentiums with ATI Mach 64's. Did you
say that there is no Acad driver (Vibrant) for this card yet…or were you
talking about something else?
I downloaded the VIBRANT driver for 3d Studio from Compuserve a month ago and I
believe it contains the ATI 64 driver to which you referred
