Len, Salut! Now the file that you moved over to the Amiga has an extension on it called .LZH right? This is a compressed file (just like .ZIP, .LHA or .DMS). What this means is that in order to save time downloading/upload- ing files to and from CIS (just like a normal BBS, just much bigger) they have been compressed. It also has the added benefit of saving on disk space. The drawback is that in order to use any of these files they need to be uncompressed. In order to decompress the .LZH files (and the more common .LHA files) you will need the decompressor which you can find here in the AmigaUser forum (under archivers/crunchers). It's called LHA138.RUN and it is a self-extracting file. So what you have to do is 1. download to LHA138.RUN file and put it into either your RAM: partition or a directory (does not matter which one – but the RAM: partition is easiest) or leave it on the floppy that you brought it over from the MAC (the hardest way). 2. using shell (found in your System drawer on your workbench), change your directory to where you placed the LHA138.RUN file (let us assume you placed it into RAM:); type CD RAM: note: if you placed it somewhere else you would use the same command, but you may need some more paths.. Let's say you placed it in a drawer called Downloads in a drawer called CIS on your DH0: partition. You would then type: CD DH0:CIS/DOWNLOADS – this will change the shell prompt to the specified drawer if you left it on your floppy you would type: CD DF0: 3. Now type LHA138.RUN and the file will extract itself into the area specified (no need to do anything, it will extract itself into whichever place you put the original file). What you should get from the file is the LHA program, the LHA.DOCS and maybe some other files (not too sure as it has been awhile since I downloaded the LHA138.RUN file). 4. You now need to move the LHA program to someplace that is easily accessed by your system. This is usually the C: drawer. So: COPY RAM:LHA TO C: – this will copy the LHA program from RAM: to the C: drawer. From the HD DH0:CIS/DOWNLOADS: COPY LHA TO C: From floppy: COPY LHA TO C: You now should have the LHA program in your C: drawer and able to be used. To get a better understanding of how LHA is to be used read the docs, but as a free service <g> I will go through a step by step on how to decompress that file you have. Put the file in your RAM: partition In shell type CD RAM: Type LHA -x x FILE.LZH (please note that FILE.LZH should be substituted with the full name of the file that you have plus the extension – ie NOT "FILE" but "FILE.LZH" or whatever) The file will extract itself into the RAM: partition. NOTE: Due to limitations you may have on the amount of free RAM you have you may not be able to extract a complete BIG .LHA or .LZH file into it.
