#Fuzzy PB540 ext Video

David, I enjoy your articles in MW, and your responses to many a query here on
CIS. I have a puzzle for you. I purchased and returned a PB 540 because the
external video on my Apple 16" monitor was slightly fuzzzy. I then purchased a
PB 540c (an AWESOME machine). When I hook this PB up to the same monitor with
an Apple provided adaptor it is still fuzzy. This is really beginning to bug
me.
I also want to mention that I normally am using this monitor with a Power Mac
8100. It is not fuzzy, in fact, it is flawless on the 8100. My needs are such
that I am going to sell the 8100 and keep the PB 540c. The only problem that I
seem to have is this fuzzy Screen. Could this have anything to do with the 16
bit wide video on the PBs. (I don't know what I just said, but I read it
somewhere).
What can I do?

Add me to the list of those with the same question. I've got a 540c, which I've
connected to an NEC Super VGA monitor (which the 540c documentation claims to
support). Video is fuzzy, and the colors appear washed out at all settings.

I have a PB520c. I connected it to Sony 1304S. Everything on the screen was
fuzzy, and seemed a little bit larger than usual.
I do not know why.

I had a 540c for about a week. I had the same 'blurry' problem using my 17"
Apple Multi Scan Display. I had ( and sold ) a 8100 Power Mac and had no
problem at all – the video display was sharp. I don't have a solution for you.
I just though you would like to know that the problem is probably not unique to
your PowerBook.

Chris, what are you using for a computer now? I am thinking that maybe a 280
duo might work? Or maybe something cheap?

I am using a 280c with a Duo Dock II and a Apple 17" Multi Scan Monitor –
no complaints. Well, maybe I could complain about the Duo's trackball.

I have been thinking that the 280c Duo & dock might be the best combination.
How do you find the speed? How is the color video on the 17"? Any Fuzzies?
Do you find the total system convenient?
This will be my next serious CPU to check out.

The speed of the 280c & Dock II is great. I had been using a Power Mac
8100 and a 840AV the last couple of months. The 280c has plenty of zip – I
don't miss my higher end desktops. The video output with the Dock is o.k. too.
I'm very picky about video performance and quality. The 280c and Dock II w/ 17"
Apple MultiScan display get a thumbs up. Don't take my word for it!!!
I also like not having to synchronize my PowerBook and desktop Mac files
anymore since my Duo is two, yes two, computers in one.

Chris, you told me just what I wanted to hear. I've got some buyers on the
PPC8100 and I'm off to the puter store to check out these 280s. Thanks for the
opinion on the monitor, I too am very picky about the resolution.

I've not heard of the problem but based on the three other replies to your
message I'd say there's a design problem in the 5xx series video.
