Len, (Greg says butting in where he probably doesn't belong) you need to CD to the directory where your LHA is at so that it can be executed as an AmigaDos command. For instance, if the file you want to decompress is in RAM: you should type….. cd WORK:compress (or wherever your copy of LHA is) …then…. LHA -e RAM:lazi.lzh Of course then it will send your decompressed file to your directory with LHA but you can move it then. A better solution would be to put LHA in your C: directory. You can then execute it as an AmigaDos command without having to CD to it's directory. P.S. There are a lot of really patient people here. Greg Feltner

Len, My patience never runs out, I was there where you are now once and I know how it can be. <g> OK, looks like from your post that there are a number of things that you have that can make life nice and easy (ie enough RAM and a harddrive).. Now to get some things.. You placed the LHA program where? Was it decompressed into the WORK:COMPRESS drawer? I suspect it is as that is why you are getting that error (ie "lha:unknown command"). This is happening because there has been no path specified to the compress drawer in your startup-sequence. The best thing to do is move the LHA program to your C: drawer (it is there on you Workbench partition – just hidden/not shown). To move/copy it over do this: 1. From Shell type CD WORK:COMPRESS 2. Type COPY LHA TO C: – what this will do is copy the LHA program to your C: drawer which holds all of your system commands for your operating system and *is* in your path structure (ie able to be accessed at all times by your system). Now the LHA command will work from shell. To decompress LAZI.LZH you should do this: 1. Move the LAZI.LZH file to RAM: 2. From shell type CD RAM: 3. To decompress the LAZI.LZH file type LHA -x x LAZI.LZH (the command LHA -x e can also be used as it does the same thing – just easier to remember that x is for extract – the -x option means that path structure will be maintained when it is extracted). 4. The file LAZI.LZH will be decompressed in your RAM: partition and will be able to be accessed/run right after the decompress is finished. =>Perhaps the best solution is to recommend a commercial workbench program =>that would do the job. I like you hate having to use shell commands (for some things you just cannot escape using the shell tho <g> – like compressing files into LHA format). To decompress files (and to do all of my disk management) I use Directory Opus. It will run you between $70-$80 CAN and can be picked up from just about any software mail order house (or if you have a good Amiga dealer they should know of it and how to lay thier hands on it). Another suggestion I should make at this time is that if you are running at least with dos 2.04 and have at least 2mb of RAM and a harddrive you consider downloading Autopilot. This is a navigator for Compuserve which will allow you pull all the messages you want from whatever forum you want then go offline and read those messages. It will do the same for programs here. You will then be able to read and post replies offline, as well as make download requests and will post your replies and make the downloads next time you log on to Compuserve. You should notice a big change in your bill as well <g>.. You will be able to find the latest autopilot in AmigaVendor forum (go amigavendor) in the autopilot section. The file name is AP.LHA and the docs are called APDOCS.LHA. To register the program to get a full working copy you can do that here online, and will be billed to your CIS account ($69.95 US).
