Actually they are vastly different problems. An example is a clay model of a person. You can roll the clay into a ball or a suasage thereby changing its shape. Try turning 5 pounds of clay into a 1/2 pound cup and you'll find it isn't quite the same or nearly as easy. // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

Mark, Changing your basic shape is pretty darned problematic as well, though. Tried it lately? 😉 Best theory I've heard so far: ODO exists in more than three dimensions. When he needs to alter mass, he just pours a portion of himself into another dimension.

Of course that must be a strange dimension. Matter appearing and disappearing at random times and places I assume. Hope no one steals his matter while hes not looking, be one heck of a way to lose an arm?!?!? // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

MH: Of course that must be a strange dimension. Matter appearing and MH: disappearing at random times and places I assume. Hope no one MH: steals hismatter while hes not looking, be one heck of a way to lose MH: an arm?!?!? It doesn't really have to be that strange at all. I once read a book called Flatland (or was to Flatworld), about a 2 dimensional world populated by polygons (triangles, squares, pentagons, etc.) They had length and width, but no height. Then one day a SPHERE visted them. It floated above them, and they couldn't see it, but it could be heard. The sphere passed through the 2D plane to be seen, but the sqaure saw only a small circle appearing out of "nowhere" then grow larger then smaller. The sphere could also "invisibly" touch the insides of the square from above. If the shapeshifter also exists in such away, then he could appear to change mass, simply by touching a smaller/larger portion of his mass to our more limited (detectable) number of planes. Actually, as a sphere passes thru Flatland, the square would see a line not a circe since his vision would be limited to one dimension, much like we are limited to 2 dimension sight. Again, it must be a strange added dimension though. Since it shares our dimensions with its added on top of it, they would have to constantly be aware not only of the actions in their general space, but also be careful not to effect the other dimensions they don't want to act in. And still their is the problem of altering his mass shape and appearance. I suppose I ask to many questions, and it is called fiction. 🙂 // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

Yeah – but the mass that has to be moved to move a flat lander is of a different order than that to move a three dimensional-er. Think of what it might mean for someone with most of his mass in another dimension. It might be a tad hard to move him in three…. {@_@}

I don't question the ability of a four dimension creature being able to move in a three dimension world, my main problem is how does it move in both at the same time coherently. While being Odo in DS9 he would also be Odo or something else in the other dimension. Now he has to move in both at the same time interating in both, reacting in both surviving in both. Seems a bit to much to ask of my imagination. // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

mark, Just because you exist in multi dimensions does not mean you have seperate lives in all those dimensions. You live in three (actually 4), is it hard for you to keep track of what you are doing in each? How do you move in all at the same time coherently? It is a natural act for you so it is for Odo. …Steve ====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====

Steve, I function just fine ( most would say at least ) in our three dimension world. But I thick I would have problems interacting in our three dimension world, and a two dimension world at the same time. What if I am about to be hit by a three dimension car but if I react I would also react in the two dimension world, that is probably inevitable. If there were a four dimension creature interacting in our dimensions his behavour would have to be consistent in ours and the others. That is my problem with behavour of 4d beings. 4d+ objects that share our 3d in with theirs cause another problem. If I shoot a bullet, does it interact with the other dimensions I cant percieve? If someone in the 4d+ universe shoots a bullet, does the 3d part of that bullet effect me? If not, why not? // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

Mark: The thing you fail to realise is that we DO live in a 4d world, only thing is that as humans we're not aware of the 4th d. A 4d life form is just aware of more dimensions than we are, they're not actually living in any more. Just because WE are unaware of something doesn't mean it ain't there. It's the old story of the tree falling in the forest, and nobody around to hear it. Did it make a sound? 🙂 // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! On AutoPilot in sunny Fort Lauderdale

Mike, I wont grant the existance of dimensions beyond the 3 we know of since although theory may postulate their existance, there is no proof of their existance either experimental or mathmatical. Unless of course your include time as a dimension ( which I would accept ). If we say "just because we are not aware of something doesnt mean it aint there" is an very old argument. Its been used as an arguement for the existance of many thing include a supreme being, and it still holds no validity as a proof. I could say that pigs can fly, although you never saw one doesnt mean they cant. BTW: Of course the tree made a sound. 🙂 // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/
#86082From: Robert HayesJan 22, 1993 7:53 AM
Actually, Mike, it doesn't make a sound. The technical definition of sound is "a vibration in a solid or a fluid"; i.e., while the waves that cause a sound can propagate through air they aren't a sound until they hit something solid, i.e. your eardrum. (This assumes that your tree fell in the middle of nothing.) <g>

Mark: Of course it can be done. It was done years ago by the mice in The Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy, when they explained that mice are but the tip of a pan dimensional being of superior intelegence than man. // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! On AutoPilot in sunny Fort Lauderdale

Mike, are we all then just the 3d extension of some higher form. Theres one heck of a defense, you cant convict me, I didn't do it, whoever controls me did it. Much like we dont convict an arm of hitting someone, since it only obeys its controller. hmmm….. // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/ {.

Some of the middle eastern countries still kind of follow that – steal, they cut off your hands. Punishing the culprit, eh? <grin> I think we ought to do something similar to rapists, if you get my drift. –Ben …via AutoPilot

Rather a stretch of justice me-thinks. My opinion is capital punishment and extreme methods of justice as cutting of a hand or putting out an eye are not a deterent to crime. States that enact capital punishment, from what I have heard, experience no decrease in crime. If it doenst work as a deterent, then it is vengence. And vengence isn't justice. Hammurabi was wrong. // .An Ameoba on AutoPilot 🙂 \X/

Nononono. Odo is actually a 37mm tall amoeboid intelligence who can mimic the holodeck using mental telepathy and telekenesis and mental projection. This gives him the ability to imitate almost anything be it a life form or a wall or a bag. He projects holographic images of what he wants to look like so even scanners pick him up properly. (Um, VERY ADVANCED holodeckish effects there.) Actually he is a devout coward continually afraid someone will accidentally stepp on him with nasty consequences. Somehow he got roped into his job as security officer and cannot seem to get out of it honorably. (He was brought up with a VERY strict code of honor …) {O,o}

Joanne, I think you got it right, there. Last episode he mentioned that he must revert back to his true form every 18 hours to recharge, and that during that time a murder was committed which someone was trying to pin on him. He had no alibi since he said he was in his office, actually in a PAIL, while the murder occured. Chris

Please don't post what's happened in an episode until a week after you see it – some of us are a bit further behind. You didn't give away anything I wouldn't have seen anyway, but you could have… thanks!
#85730From: Christopher TolmieJan 19, 1993 4:28 PM
Robert, I thought it was already aired nationwide! Just where are you and how far behind in episodes? Don't tell me you pick up the broadcast after it bounces off the moon or something? Well, I barely ever keep up with ANY show on an episode by episode basis, I was just lucky this time. Well, I won't tell you about the ahemm… scenario but that I did figure out the perp. of the murder well before the show was over. That murder was also used in the trailers for episode, so I don't think I'm giving up too much info. Remember Joanne said he was an amoeba, not me. Hehehe! Chris

Chris, DS9 is syndicated. Although I've already seen the ep you mentioned thanks to a friend with a sat dish and vcr, it doesn't air here until next Saturday.
#85879From: Steve SetzerJan 20, 1993 4:14 PM
Chris, DS-9 is syndicated and it is up to the individual stations as to when it will air. The Satilite feed goes up on Saturday (I believe) and the stations tape it for play back on whatever schedule they have set up. Some places do not broadcast it till the following Saturday. We could take the method used in the Sci-Fi forum and whenever you wish to discuss a un aired or recently air show that chances are everyone has not seen is to include the message title in brackets "<Odo Sleeps in Bucket>" and if you saw the brackets you would know to not read that message, or not to collecti ti (if you are gatering headers. …Steve ====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====

Steve, I guess then I see the actual sat feed. If I had known I was discussing an episode that has been unseen by the 'other side' of the country I would have refrained comment. However, when I read another's comment about ODO which I was replying to, I had presumed the show had been nationally broadcast, my error. Usually, I pretty much 'lurk' around the sci-fi thread, it gets too sci-fi-tific for my participation. I prefer to enjoy the quiet chuckles I get reading the thread's authors' posts. You'll enjoy this episode, but any good Sherlock Holmes fan will fathom the mystery well before the first third of the show is over. It's all elementary, my dear Watson. Chris

I read part of your message before I realized what you were talking about and stopped reading…. Remember that not everyone has seen the next show yet. 🙁 Steve

Steve, I thought DS9 aired on Monday nights nation-wide? Are you saying that it is shown on different days in other areas? When does it get repeated? How was I to know that it? See the parent message I was replying to. Chris

It's up to the local stations to decide when to air the shows. They work it the same way as they did for The Next Generation. Steve

Re: ODO existing in multiple dimensions. Not a bad idea. It has been done before. ODO doesn't know where he is from and it was hinted at that he may be from the wormhole in the pilot. -Jerry
