For those interested… For the next week or two, you can see the planet Mercury just after sundown. I post this cause Mercury is fairly elusive and there are many who stargaze frequently and have never seen it. About 1/2 hr. after sunset, look to the west. The really bright object is Venus; about halfway between Venus and the horizon and a little to the right will be Mercury. It's about the only thing there. You can make it out w/ the unaided eye but w/ binoculars, it's really visible. I watched it set around 10:15pm here on the East coast. Another notch in my belt!

Dave: I know you like quoting messages in your replies, but 8 lines of quotation for 2 lines of reply seems a little… excessive. I'll admit that quoting has its place, but generalized quoting (called cascading) is really a hold-over from USENET, where there are no threads. Most of us have off-line message readers, and are able to look back in a thread to see what a response is about. With a little thought you can reply without quoting, yet relate the subject to the original message. Evan

/* I know you like quoting messages in your replies, but 8 lines of quotation for 2 lines of reply seems a little… excessive. */ Hi Evan! 🙂 Hey dude, you're slacking off… I've been overquoting for months… what took you so long? <g> /* I'll admit that quoting has its place, but generalized quoting (called cascading) is really a hold-over from USENET, where there are no threads. */ Actually I find far more functionality in it for the benefit of the people I'm conversing with. They quoted replies may get back to me by as much as a week later, and as I'm on 5 channels right now (Compuserve only being one of them), monitoring 3 forums for NAAUG traffic (average mail about 500 messages a week), it gets a little hairy trying to put "a little thought" into replying without a frame of reference. And I've had too many responses that got back from me late where the other person would send a message saying "hunh?" It's Compuserve's problem. We're paying for the usage. And seeing some of the messages that go through here (huge) which don't interest me sometimes, I don't feel I'm putting any unnecessary burdens on too many people. /* With a little thought you can reply without quoting, yet relate the subject to the original message. */ I can, maybe (I've got to upgrade my RAM), but a lot of other folks can't, and the subject header is not reliable enough after a day's threads to describe the frames of reference. Look at the subject header on this one! Mercury. Yeah, I get it. Sure. 🙂 Anyway, it just seems weird to hear from you after so long regarding this. But then again you are the [WeirdTM]… you're entitled! I can try to cut back on the quotes, but I mainly do it for the benefit of others to tap in. The NAAUG/UsrGrp section is meant to be a big invite, and it's hard to get people to jump in when all they see is a blurb. If they see the remnants of what might look like an interesting discussion, we have served our purpose in our section. Hope you won't feel to offended if we continue overquoting once in a while. And as much as I wish I could say I always know what a response to me is regarding, I all too often use the quote to remind myself during the reply what I'm trying to respond to. Side note: most of the messages I receive have more than one question. I found myself using a lot of "regard blah blah blah" which took as much space as the original quote. Finally, I regulate my quoting fairly well with the replies I get. I don't understand why even an insane level of overquoting would cause anyone a problem other than their wish to have to download less. With the expectations I and NAAUG have of increasing the traffic on these forums multiple times over, no quoting at all will not help in this effort. It's only going to get busier as word gets out that all this is all going on. As a friend of mine said a few weeks ago when Compuserve seemed a bit slow… "Welcome to the information highway… expect traffic jams". 🙂 p.s. what have you been up to lately, will you be at AEC, and are you attending the NAAUG annual conference in conjunction with Autodesk University this year? I'll be at the NAAUG booth at AEC if you'd care to drop by. It's been a while. 🙂 -dave

Brian, >> As with any superhighway, you've got to expect some roadkill. << That is rather crytic in that I'm not sure what you're referring to as "roadkill". The possibilities and implications are disturbing. <g> -JE P.S. Of course I can see this from a sysop point of view. Lost downloads corrupted files etc. but the other implications …. 🙂

"RoadKill Cafe" Sounds like my kinda place. Ah, yes. It reminds me of Dear 'ol Ma's home cooking. I remember the days when I'd run into Ma scooping up dinner off the interstate on my way home from school. Those were the days.

Brian! I've been corrected….The actual name of the Place is "OutBack Jack's RoadKill Grill & Cafe".( Hence the Aussie Idem ) …I luv' it! <BG> We had a Ma's too only this was more than a couple years ago when the drinking/driving age was 18….She owned a bar/resort way the heck outa town. If she ( Ma' had to be in her 50's) thought you had too much she would throw you out…sometimes even physically! I remember one time a couple o' guys had too much and deceided they wanted to fight…she grabbed her baseball bat and shoved em' both in the ribs so hard they hit the floor then she told em' to take it out side….sorta took all the macho out of it! <BG> Oh Ya' as a reminder not to drive and drink too much she had photo's of literally _Every_ car accident that literally everyone was in that ever stopped at her place. The entire ceiling and three walls were full by the time I was old enough to belly up to the bar. The bar had 7 barstools and you had to not fight over them or you were out. Two pool tables a real nice lake for fishing or throwing your buddies in, and I never ever saw a cop at her place not even to say hi! Oh' Ya' The Bar was pretty much a tar-paper shack attached to her house and she'd walk up what used to be the 3 back steps to the house to her kitchen when you ordered anything like a hamburger. She'd keep an eye on the place from what use to be the old kitchen window in to the bar whilst she was preparing your dinner. Acutally it was even more colorful than this but…you kinda hada be there to really appreciate it. <g> I'm ramblin' to I'll go away now. Murph'

Evan, My thoughts on this is that ASOFT is probably the best self regulated forum on Compuserve, and that a personal note e-mail would be appropriate. If there's a disagreement on what constitutes forum etiquette there should be a text file with specific guidelines which can be referred to, and should there be a disagreement, an abitrer to settle the issue. That way it won't appear as abitrary, unless of course some people get singled out while other people slide. It seems to me there should accountability on both sides. -JE

That is a good point, John, but do you think the "ends" is worth the "means" in you suggestion? After all, how much trouble do we really have here? After spending four years on the internet with my college account, I was, and still am, amazed by the smoothness of this forum. — James — MAP —

James, >> but do you think the "ends" is worth the "means"? << I think guidelines are a good idea when it is someone's task to insure that certain standards are followed. Everyone should know what is expected. There are several taboos which have gotten people into awkward situations because they didn't know what they were. And as a result, have been chatised when I suspect had they known it never would have happened. Discussing "street pricing" is a good example. The thread that started this thread is also a good example. -JE

>> Everyone should know what is expected. << Indeed, we are in agreement. But any good suggestion should be accompanied by an action plan. Your idea of a text file that describes the forum culture is good, but how would a greenhorn know about it? I suppose a notice could be placed in the welcome screen when a person joins. Another concern I have is who would enforce it? It would be yet another task for our sysops to deal with. On the other hand, pointing someone to a text file is no big effort. This text file idea sort of reminds me of a "constitution" — commonplace in many organizations. — James — MAP —

James, Not being aware of the situation, I think you're talking this thread out of context. The note was to Evan and he is aware of the case I'm making. I feel it is his responsibility to follow through with some kind of proposal as it is his job as the "Enforcer". <g> -JE P.S. I don't want to make this an issue of debate with you James. I was commenting directly to the person who needed to hear it.

It should be taken to a private message, where no others will be able to contribute their opinions? That's an interesting thought. Possibly other threads should be taken private too. Certainly those where people might disagree. Look — self regulation is a wonderful thing. But it still requires some discussion as to what is appropriate. My message to Dave was exactly that — Discussion. It did not say "Stop Quoting." It expressed an opinion on quoting — it did not express a policy on quoting. Apparently the role of the TM in this forum is not clear to some members. Any comment a TM makes is seen as policy. Well, it doesn't work that way. My comments are my own. To clarify the situation, I have removed the TM from after my name (above.) Evan

Hey, Dave. I've got to stop posting messages when I'm grouchy. Sorry. (But then, you know I'm a grouch, and probably don't take offense.<G>) In any case, I can see the justification for the quoting in some cases. I've got pretty good thread tracking tools, but I guess some people don't. Of course, quoting can get ridiculous. Like when someone quotes a whole message, and then adds "I agree." <G> Regards A/E/C — I'll be there. I'm doing 3 tutorials and one panel, in addition to all the other fun stuff. I haven't yet scheduled NAAUG/Autodesk University, but am leaning towards going. BTW: Are you still working for the boys in Tempe? Evan Evan
