#P5/90 slower than 486?

Spilling over into the swapfile seems to have performance implications on the Pentium that are far more dramatic than on my 486 platforms. One last possible clue, the CD-ROM drive I've disabled is a slave off of the IDE hard drive. Gateway ships with it plugged into the MB, but it can only use IRQ 15 in this position and Lantastic's Node Runner 2000 will only use IRQ 15 (of course, I haven't read the Lantastic manuals yet so don't quote me, but I did look in the index… ;-)). Any recommendations on how to increase the margin between me and the quicksand? In particular, are there materials or material-creating techniques to avoid (i.e., two textures = twice the pain, etc.). I won't flinch at even the most basic of hints, as I'm a programmer who finished his part of the project way too early, and I'm learning 3DS animation and networking on the fly. I think I have a dual dependency now–Visual Basic and the Keyframer! Now if only I could get the hang of replicating Vangelis with SuperJam! My apologies for the length of this, I wanted to try and disgorge as much information as possible for those other poor Pentium victims out there. I'm a thousand miles from home and 900 miles closer to New Orleans, so I'll be on the Rue Bourbon this time tomorrow and out of touch for the weekend. Tom!

Hi Tom! I too just finished setting up a Gateway P5-90 and what a pain! Actually, if I didn't need a sound card, ethernet, modem, SCSI and CD-ROM, not to mention the additional IDE hard drive, the process would have been simple. Anyway, for your CD-ROM problem, Gateway ships the system with it connected to a second IDE port. Try removing it from this port and cabling it with the hard drive and be sure to reset its jumpers to IRQ 14. (Read the CD-ROM manual for more details.) That oughta get you going! – Steve Ormonde

Thanks, Steve. Did that at first, but pulling the CD-ROM (which I don't really need–having long ago moved all my materials onto a network HD) out of the loop gave me more memory and faster rendering times! I'd look up how much, but three out of three machines are busy rendering away and will be doing so for quite a while. (Meet George Jetson, push button, sit down, put feet up…) Tom!

Tom: I've been following your comments on P5/90. Very interesting! Had no idea setup would be so painful. I take it you now see significant performance increase over 486/66? How much faster would you say your new machine is in rendering? Just out of curiosity, what do you do? I'm working on a multimedia engine, flic compressor/player for an upcoming CD-ROM title. I use 3DS and planning to get a P5/90, max it with 128mb ram and render huge 50mb+ texture files. I'm looking at the Dell machine. Any suggestions? Do you thing the Gateway is a better buy? I'd get a Micron, cheap memory, lots of ram slots, good performance, good support, and good prices. Tell them you're running 3DS. JNJ

Reza: With very little data to use for comparison, the P5/90 is running from 4 to 10 times faster than the 486DX2/66 VESA. The more complex the render task, the better the Pentium performs relative to the 486. These numbers are extremely rough, for several reasons. The P5/90 has 64Mb, the 486 only 32Mb. The P5/90 memory config is absolutely bare bones, the 486 is not (the 486 is a network server and loses something like 40K to this, and sometimes I boot it with CD-ROM drivers so that it'll sing to me while I work, sacrificing another 25K or so (don't quote me on these numbers)). Render times on the P5/90 are between 2 and 4 minutes, on the 486 they're from 8 to 40 minutes per frame. Setup was not really painful, it was simply a matter of stripping config, autoexec, and the network to their bare minimums. 3DS ran fine before, just 30 times slower. If you want pain, try adding a Sound Blaster or any digital video card to the mix. Now that's pain! I call it Studio De Sade. It's possible, and I've done it with several different video and sound boards; but only for beta test purposes. All extraneous hardware gets ripped out (and from now on, all absolutely unnecessary drivers) when I go into a serious 3D Studio session. As to what I do, right now I'm working on a multimedia CD-ROM game. The software end of things is done and ready for beta test (this was my original task) as soon as the artwork is complete. I've moved into the position of animator/3DS model refiner to allow our artists more modeling time. On any given 14-hour day, I also wear art direction, marketing, and tech support hats. In between, I like to walk, camp, and photograph the wilder areas of our country's national forests (but don't get the idea that I support Al Gore and his legions of armchair environmental fascists–Big Bro scares me more than bulldozers). As far as recommendations on a machine goes, maximize your RAM (my P5/90 was running dog slow whenever it hit the swapfile–I eliminated the need to go to swap, but haven't had time to go back and find out the whys and wherefors of the problem). Go with a vendor you trust. We stuck with Gateway on the P5/90 because we have a bunch of Gateway machines, some in service 24 hours a day for several years. I've never had a quality problem, nor a problem returning product, and I know how to punch through their automated phone system to get to a human when necessary. Someone else did the research on the P5/90 purchase, so I can't speak to how thorough a job they did, but it was reported to me that Gateway had the best price with a barely acceptable delivery time. Also, it very much depends on how many roles the machine will have to perform. I've been told by several more-or-less reliable sources that the Gateway motherboard works with several soon-to-be-released PCI-bus digital video boards. This was another plus in their favor. Tom: Thanks for the P5/90 insight. What is holding me back from getting one right now is the $5000 cost of 128mb RAM. But I remember paying $4500 for the original IBM-PC and 10mb external hard disk. So i guess this isn't so bad compared to what you're getting for the price. By the way what kind of a CD-ROM game are you developing? Is it a Windows or DOS based game? I don't remember if i mentioned it in my last e-mail to you but I'm working on a CD-ROM based software running in 32-bit DOS which uses my compression software. It's a virtual Earth traveler and uses the GeoSphere's image rendered by 3D-Studio. Keep in-touch and good luck with your project. Regards, Reza D.
