I'm looking for an animation of water that I can use on the bottom of a pool or
sand or similar. Something similar to what's seen on the bottom of an in-ground
pool. Those cool patterns that I just can't seem to duplicate. Any ideas? I do
have Disk #2 which contains water and have been experimenting but haven't been
able to quite get what I'm after. Maybe certain settings?

I believe what you're describing is refractive caustics. While I've gotten some
reasonable results in the past using the Water IPAS, you're best bet is to
rotoscope a swimming pool surface, then possibly try using a sequence with
projector lights. I have a number of long rotoscoped and CG-generated
sequences, but they are quite large. Maybe I can cut out 15 frames or so, scale
down, and JPEG them or something. Then you would need to duplicate them the
desired number of times cycling back & forth – it might work o.k.. Check the
library in the next couple of days in case I can reduce them small enough to
upload.

Bill, That's exactly what I was talking about – I just wouldn't have called it
refractive caustics. <g> If you have the time to get something together for me
I'd truly appreciate it as at the moment I have no means of rotoscoping the
sequence myself. Thanks again and great response to Whiner Man.

OK, I've just uploaded "Caust.zip" for you. This contains a sequence of 45
320×240 HIGHLY compressed JPEG images of rotoscoped swimming pool water
caustics….sorry for the small size and high compression, but the zip file is
still 360k as it is. You might want to use these to make a "ping-pong"
sequenced IFL of the desired length, running from 1 to 45 to 1, etc.. Try
mapping them, maybe as a bump map too, or projecting them with a light. Hope
you can use them somehow.

You're radical dude! Getting those JPEG's together like that! You know if
they're used in projector lights the compression probably won't be as big a
factor, don't you think. Did you upload them to the library or to his e-mail
account. I'd definitely be interested in checking them out.

Hi John,
I u/l to the library (#3) last night. I didn't try them out with a projector
light, but I agree – there might be more tolerance in that application. Plus, I
have used the full-frame TGA's with projector lights, and it worked pretty
good. Hope you can use them too. They are really squashed though (compression >
50).

I'd suggest that you search the Kellerman section of the libs.. oops i meant
Animator 🙂 section of the lib with the keywords "KELLERMAN WATER". There are
several by Ed that knocked me out when I saw them. Maybe Ed can narrow it down
to one or two of the files.. 🙂

P.S. You might look at the CD textures under blue patterns, and as Bill
suggested use with Projector lights. Ideally you would want a small animated
map, but you could combine several of these textures with light movement to
create the desired result.
I don't usually jump in with 3ds tips but there is the caustic.flc on the r3
cd. I applied about 60% as a 2nd map (with some additional blur) to all the
objects underwater. I also used it as a 2nd map for the water surface.
Also, Ed K uploaded a cool water bump map that could be worked.

In addition to all the other excellent suggestions, there is a "CAUSTIC.FLC" on
the WTC CD-ROM that does a brilliant job of what you're describing. Assign it
as a projector light with the right R,G,B values for your scene, and you're in
buisness!

I'm going to check out Bill's caustic contribution as well. I can
always use a good one <g>.
Could we possibly be seeing a Caustic Refraction (imitator) IPAS in the
future? I could see such a thing done with an SXP with varying sizes… now
for the glints on the surface, I guess your stuck with water…
I think water.sxp would be able to do caustics if used as a projector light.

Maybey that would be a really cool IPAS, however I would assume it should be
done with some type of a turbulence function that can be applied to the
lights..
This is how we have done this type of stuff, in our propreitary renderer at
RGA.

Another IPAS I'm curious about, is there anything available to allow
you to "Fill" another object? For example, I lofted a pool recently. Pretty
basic pool, and I wanted to "fill" the pool with some transparent object to
allow me to see the bottom of the pool… an IPAS would've been awesome…

I'm kind of jumping in on this without really knowing the previous
conversations- but I have used a dark blue, 2-sided, semi-transparent, glass
material created in the mat.-editor to achieve the "water in the swimming
pool" effect. I'm sure you've already looked into this, but if its any
consulation, our finished image is ultra photorealistic!
Yeah that sounds good… I tend to stay a little closer to green for
the chlorine bit…
But what I was looking for was an IPAS to create the "filling"
geometry… something to create water <or cement, or whatever> geometry… It's
sometimes tricky to match it from the lofter, and mistakes suck.
I have not yet heard of an IPAS routine which would accomplish what you're
looking to do, but I'll keep my eyes open. I think we just used that 2-sided
"jellow like" material and ,with the 3-d scale tool, filled in the container.
It did not matter if it protruded over the sides because it was hidden by the
base plane…. well, it worked for us, but good luck! Nick
Yeah, that's what I did too. However, I was wondering if the renderer
might have an easier time if the objects were perfectly mounted… I still
think that would be a cool IPAS.
It could also work for jars, bottles, bowls, houses <g>, anything
else… hmmm.
