#3D Animators needed!

->In the coming years with the studio in every house philosophy I believe it
->will lower the quality of our media and the need for talented people will
->never be more great
I must disagree with this statement. With the increase in the volume
of work produced in this field, there will allways be a proportional
rise in the amount of mediocre product that gets released. However,
the fact that this technology is now more affordable to the average
Joe/Josephine enables alot of really creative people who would have
never touched this stuff to express themselves in a new medium.
As someone who has spent a lifetime trying to create high quality
product in a modest home studio (both audio and graphics) I truly
believe that alot of really great stuff is created but never gets
seen. This is mostly because alot of the publishers of this stuff
aren't artists and don't judge quality, just perceived marketability.
This is true in any medium (just look at the movies or watch/listen
to MTV).
I was at the 3DS User group meeting last Thursday here at Autodesk in
Itasca, and saw a demo reel from a guy who is trying to break into
the biz. He had about 8 minutes of unbelievable stuff that literally
had me standing there with my jaw hanging open. It was 10x better
than 90% of the 3DS stuff I've seen, and easily on par with the 3.0
demo reel. Yet he's had a tough time getting network interest because
nobody knows him and he doesn't have a long track record of succesful
commercial projects.
This is really an age-old battle of quality vs. corporate risk-taking
which is just in it's latest incarnation, CD-ROM publishing. I do
agree with your statement that "we have an influx of sound and
animation just because we can", mostly because there's alot of folks
out there buying CD titles _just because they have a CD player_. <g>
This is true but, the bad will outweigh the good. I am Always
surprised at how many dump notalent people there are in the world.
have you listened to the JUNK top 40 radio stations try to push on
people and call it music? HOW did these people get record deals? We
have cable channels that show nothing but a weather map with 50
channels now imagine 300 channels and the garbage they will show. You
can get a public access show on cable now for 50 bucks a half hour.
NO in the future you will have to wade through the DODO to find
anything of redeeming value. My father always said "Nobody ever
went broke underestimating the stupidity of Americans" and
marketability is base on what these stupid people buy, I hate
Marketing weasels and there decisions, how do they know what we
want, who are they to judge anything. It all comes down to the
people with the Money(Power) make the rules for all of us and they
might be the least qualified.

<g> I could write a novel on this topic, having been active in the
Chicago music scene for the last 12 years, but the cliff notes would
basically read:
"Becoming a successful pop musician in these times has very little to
do with musical ability, talent, and songwriting. It has *alot* to do
with your image, look, and the whim of some coked-up middle level
agent (CUMLA) who deems you worthy enough to pass you along to the
higher levels of record label execs. People making new music have the
toughest time of it, because record labels find less risk in putting
Pink Floyd on *yet* another album tour (pretty soon they'll be live
via satelite from a nursing home) than developing new, more creative
acts. Whereas rock music used to be a symbol of free thought and
rebellion against the Establishment, it has now become the
Establishment through precision marketing."
Yes, I do harbor some animosity. 🙂
