Sound in animations

What is the easiest way for a begining animator (me!) to inculde a sound file with an animation? I am using DPaint for images and Anim Build to make simple animations and would like to add some sound tracks to playback. I am a total novice at this but enjoy playing around with animations. Thanx for any help On AutoPilot! (at last)

Get a Copy of PP&S Animation Station,it's like $30 or so and allows you to add sound to yer anims.I got mine FREE on a Euro mag Cover disk. If you bought an amiga recently you should have recieved Amigavision which will also let you add sound/music and Speech FX to yer work.

Did I miss something? Since when do ANIMs have sound in them? Is this an extension that Animation Station added? Which players support sound embedded in an ANIM?

John, View (by Michael Hartman) since version 2.0 has supported sound in anim playback (I've had that for well over a year, it is up to version 3.2) as well as a few other anim viewers I have seen. I just have not found a way to put the sound in there! …Steve On AutoPilot! (at last)

I'm not sure if any of the Pd Anim players will play Anims with Embedded sound but Animation Station will.It allows you to go to the specific frame you want and add a 8SVX sound to it(obviously the sound will probably play longer than a single frame.).If I'm not mistaken one of the older View prg's also allowed Sound to be added to it to but I don't think the Sound File is embedded in the Anim itself. In fact I'm not sure if Animation Station embeds the Sound either.I think it is simply a command added to the Anim file saying to play the sound. Not 100% sure tho John.

So theoretically, a program could split a ten-second sound into tiny 8SVX sounds for each frame, and attach them to the anim.

No sorry John as far as I know that is NOT possible unless you use a prg like Audiomaster to cut the 8SVX file into smaller bits.If the Sound file iss 1 second it will play for 30 Frames UNLESS you put a command for another sound file in Before the original sound has run thru.I imagine this also depends on how many voices each of the Sounds use as well.I haven't really used this option too much so I'm not 100% sure on these things John.

On a brighter note, I know I've been adamant about "QuickTime will never be ported to the Amiga", but maybe I should recant. Apparently, Apple *has* released a C++ toolkit for making movies… I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that it's working on some Unix boxes, as a port, but I'm going to check into it. One of the "about box" people for QuickTime was at the NewTek party, and I still have his card… 🙂

Thanx for the Quicktime info John.

AmigaVision will do this very good, turning off the pause gadget in the animation icon and then puttinga sound or music icon afterwards. I always use that… Also ScalaMM does this, although I haven't tried it yet… It also has an utility to compress animations so that they run faster. Jorge, -> Also ScalaMM does this, although I haven't tried it yet… It also -> has an utility to compress animations so that they run faster. We have an installation of ScalaMM here at Visual Magic. The main purpose of the "animation compression" is really to allow you to play large anims off HD. It does a pretty good job at that, too. However, when using the highest setting (32x), the anims really get bigger. Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

I see Thomas. What kind of uses are you doing for Scala MM as of now in your company? I use it mostly for slide show presentations and have used Scala V 1.0 extensively with very large audiences. It does that job perfectly. Jorge Escobar/MEGABYTE PRODUCTIONS (..and AutoPilot, of course!)

Jorge, We (actually my partner is more the Scala guy) use ScalaMM mostly only for the wipes and blends. Since all our output goes to video (so far) we're not using the interactive features yet, but we plan to. Plus we used the compression feature to play large Imagine-generated Anims off HD. Now we'll probably more be using ClariSSA, a German program which turns anims to half-frame interlace S(uper) S(mooth) A(nimation)s. They are much faster than Anim-5, work with DCTV and play off HD. Tell us more about the ClariSSA, Super Smooth Anims. I have not heard of this before, is there an add for this in any of the magazines? <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>

Tony, -> Tell us more about the ClariSSA, Super Smooth Anims. The SSA anim format was first introduced by ProDAD of Germany with their Low-cost Video Effects Package "Adorage". SSA Anims are always interlaced. They don't consist of full frames, but rather of different half-frames, like TV. They play a lot faster than Anim-5s do. ClariSSA is ProDADs second package. It allows you to convert any ANIM-5 or series of single frames into an SSA. It offers DDO (dynamic disk operation = playing off HD), a full ARexx interface, some forward-backward effects and four buffers for different anims to combine. The finished SSAs run much faster than the original ANIM-5s. The interface is fully style guide compliant but the operation takes a little getting used to. The drawback is that SSAs can only be played from ClariSSA and not for example from Scala MM or AmigaVision. There is not even a stand-alone player. We use ClariSSA mainly with time-critical DCTV anims. We plan to use it for compiling large anims from several smaller ones which will require a little ARexx-Programming. If you want to know more, contact ProDAD, Feldelestrasse 24, 7717 Immendingen 6, Germany. It costs around $120. However, at the Computer Graphics '9, here in Zurich, I heard that a special, A4000-optimized anim format will be developed. The specs will be given out to developers to integrate the format in their apps (like SCALA etc.). This is, however, still Vaporware. I am in no way associated with ProDAD aside from being a satisfied customer. P.S. to stay with the thread title: ClariSSA cannot integrate sound into animations ;^) Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged
