I made up the VGA cable as you suggested, and it works OK (…well, sort of).
The picture itself is excellent, but I have to connect the monitor *AFTER* I
have booted, otherwise it does not show anything.
John Gager sent me some details of an adaptor for A500+s etc.(I'll upload them
here somewhere) , but they claim that the adaptor is not necessary for the
A1200. Basically it appears to be just a transistor to fix up the sync.
Do you think that this mod. has any chance of working? (Sadly, my
understanding of these things is very limited.) Anyway I'd rather plug in my
monitor after booting, and have everything working fine, than blow something up
;> even if this is a bit tacky.
Any bright ideas?

I'd be afraid of blowing something up if I plugged the monitor in while
the computer is on!
It could be that you have somehow got the Genlock signal the wrong way, as
that would account for the Ami turning off the VGA stuff. I'd check that
first.
