Imagine my surprise, when after rendering 5250 frames of a 450,000 face project on 11 machines in 3 different friends' companies, during the LAST 30 DAYS, I realize that the Gamma On/Off setting is not saved with a project. Oh boy, that was REAL FUN. Am I an idiot, or is this common knowledge?

This is documented, and we did it this way so the status of your Gamma settings wouldn't be changed if you got a project file from someone else. That's exactly what screwed you up in this case… you WANTED your friends gamma settings to be changed by your project file. – G

Gamma is primarily documented in the Installation Guide (since Gamma must be set up during installation). In the end of the Gamma section, under "Storing Your Gamma Settings" you'll find a note that tells you that gamma is not stored with project files, with the single exception of the specially named 3ds.prj file that's read at start-up. Sorry you got caught on this. We purposely did not include gamma storage with project files because we didn't want a situation where your gamma settings would change by simply loading a project file. The effect of gamma can be subtle, and it would be a nightmare if your gamma settings changed when you loaded a project file you got from someone else's system. In most cases, once you've found the correct gamma settings, you don't change them. If you _do_ change them frequently, you want to _know_ they've been changed. – Jack
