MESH FILE REQUEST
7 messages in this thread
Dear 3DS users:
Anyone know of a company or individual who has a mesh file of a koala bear?
Strange request I know. Any help appreciated. Viewpoints catalog didnt list
one.
Best Regards,

Peter,
Viewpoint may not have one now, but I am sure that if you contact them that
they would be willing to make one for you at an economical fee- even moreso if
it wouldn't be a proprietary model, so that they could sell it in their catalog
I don't know if you're affiliated with VP, but I was curious on their
policies regarding datasets…
If I were to purchase a humanoid for example, and then modified him (or
her) extensively, and then use it, would that be considered violating the
copyright on the mesh? (I assume there -is- a copyright on the mesh, else
there wouldn't be a company… <g>).
I am not necessarily affiliated with them, but I have bought datasets from them
and they do broker some of my work. You really should ask them the details, but
my understanding would be that whatever part of your "new" dataset came from
the purchased Viewpoint model ( ie: the nose on a face ) would have to be
removed before you could sell it without any problems.
On this same subject, last night I saw a mesh input digitizer for SGi
systems, where a "model" was sculpted from clay and then "poked" with a stylus.
There was some sort of field so the stylus always knew where it was. The
resulting model was absolutely -mindblowing-.
When do I get this technology?
Stylus based digitizers have been around for a while, and are quite common in
the personal computer scene. There are several companies making these
do-hickeys, prices ranging from $1500 to $15000. Faro makes a high-end one,
which you can get with Mira's Hyperspace software for Mac or Windows, and there
was an announcement recently in this forum by someone from Mira that they've
bundled (and ported) their software to the new Personal Digitizer (or something
like that…) for @ $1500.
Stylus digitizing is pretty nice, but very time consuming and requires some
skill and technique to pull off. The mesh was mindblowing probably because the
guy doing the model was reeeaaallly good. I've seen some pretty
non-mindblowing digitized stuff.

Heh… I can imagine.
