Hello Paul,
Is there really any reason why a device such as a Flicker Free Video or Retina
board would do physical damage to a toaster card.
My toaster is in for it's second repair after I attempted to use it with a FFV
installed in the Denise socket. First the system guru'd and then the toaster
would not respond or genlock. And this was subsequent to removal of the FFV.
Incidentally, the system was unplugged and I was grounded etc. when the FFV was
installed and removed.
This seems to be an ambiguous area. I have people tell me there is no way a FFV
will allow a toaster to work and yet I used that very combination without even
one glitch for nearly 5 months. I believe you told me that you also use a Nanao
17" display with the toaster and FFV.
Do the majority of toaster uses accept a flickering display for all their non
toaster applications?
I am really getting depressed using this $1000 Nanao 17" monitor for only ibm
work.
Paul could you specifically describe your toaster setup. Do you use a 300 watt
power supply?

I've been using FFV and Toaster together since Late Toater 1.0 and the
first reve of FFV. I've now got the FFV II and Toaster 3.1, still no
problem.
The only thing I can think of is that with FFV you still need something
connected to the video port that looks like a 1080 or 1084. In my case it
is a 1080 that also has composit out of the Toaster Preview running to it.
You can use a Pre-Vue Technolgies synch strainger there as a video
"terminator", but there has to be something on that 23 pin port.
As for damaging the Toaster, I think the only way that may have occured is
if you were wiggling/changing cables at teh video connector with the
machine turned on. If you shorted the +12 or +5 volt pins to ground or
each other (not that hard to do) you may have blown the pico fuses that
are on those lines – its a bear to fix them too. Entire motherboard has
to come out. If the fuses didn't blow, it is possible that some damage
was done to the Toaster. But my feeling is that the pins and traces and
fuses of the video port would suffer the damage before the Toaster.
BTW, one of my Toaster set-ups has the Micro R&D 250 watt supply, the
other has a 300 watt supply.

I did do all the operations with the system off and unplugged. Not much static
elec down here in the humid south either.
I would really like to try using the FFV again but am a little gun shy. I know
about those pico fuses. I've replaced em before.
I guess I should think about upgrading the power supply I'm sure this one is
straining. TBCIV,DPS PCA,ZEUS 040/33 W/16megs,2 hard drives,modem.

DPS stuff in the past has been especially power hungry. Don't know about
the ZUES itself, but all 040s really use the juice and if yours is a
fantop instead of heat sink model its using that much more. Then HDs,
well, the bigger the more juice goes out. I think you should definitly
give Micro RD a call. And, if you got a meter handy, double check the
video port pins.

Yes I intend now to get the Bigger power supply. I had read somewhere earlier
that the Toaster used something on the Ami pwr supply for timing. Do you know
if the Micro R&D will satisfy that if there is such a thing..
I know what you mean about the video port. That happened to me once with my
Supergen. Like you say you have to pull the motherboard to replace the pico
fuses. If I remember right I couldn't find the exact same amp rating so I went
even a little lower on the blow. That is all ok though. Even the voltages at
the power connector are indicating ok when it's all loaded up. I'm going to get
the bigger ps anyway.
I still would like to get over and see your setup someday. Just got back to
work yesterday at Santa barbara. Will be here for 2 weeks. Give me a call if
you feel like showing off your stuff some evening or over the week-end.

I've got a Micro R&D 250 watt in one Toaster workstation and their 300
watt in the other Toaster workstation. No problems and the 250 is about 2
years in service, the 300 close to one year in service now.
After this Tuesday there is a dead spot in the schedule (unless the people
I have to deliver to come up with another idea for me to do for them –
like they did the last two deliveries – not complaining you know!)

I know what might be giving you trouble, you do have the 1084S on the
video port still, right?
Even if it's off it will be OK. I've got the stock PS and a T4000 in a
2500. The big Nanao is a gem indeed.

Yes I was using the 1084S on the 23 pin port.
Maybe as I said to a friend, it must be voodoo electricity since I moved back
to the New Orleans area.
I know that when I was in Ca. I used a FFV1, T4000 and Taxan Multisync and had
no Toaster problems at all. It all started when I decided to just change to a
17" monitor.
But at any rate the 23 pin video was terminated.
