…and another thing. Even though my SYs's prefs is set to the correct
date, when I try to schedule a delayed fax, it displays the next day, and
does not permit turning the calendar back. Any suggestions? Oh, by the
way I received two faxes today, one in response to one I sent, so at least
we know it works, basically.

the date problem was a known bug in earlier versions of GPFax. Taken care
of in 2.342

Has anyone got the silent answer feature of GPFax 2.342S to work with the
SupraFax v.32bis modem? I checked (using the I10 command) and I do have
option 141 (silent answer) on the modem.
I followed the GPFax answering machine instructions (did not talk for the
first 3 seconds of the announcement to give teh modem time to detect the
CNG tones) and chose auto answer and silent answer in the options and set
the environment to pick up on one more ring than the answering machine.
When the incomming call arrives, I see the modem's "RI" status display
(ringing) and one of the lights flashes (looks like the SD light, I
think). This happens for the 4 rings the answering machine is set to.
Then the modem picks up, the answering machine cuts off, I hear a long
non-intermittent scream from the modem before the speaker turns off, then
GPFax ends up hanging up the modem with no report generated, or it puts up
a "time out" message and hangs the phone up a report showing a 0 page fax
received for that took 3 seconds to receive.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Also, any ideas on how to confirm
the modem is in silent answer mode? There is nothing in the docs about a
readback status or even a command to put it in that mode.

Your set up seems about right…couple of minor points (that I've gathered
from SupraTech on their BBS)
Set GpFax to answer 2 rings after Answering machine (ie; machine 4,
gpfax 6)
The answering machine and modem cannot be attached to each other – put
on separate wall outlets.
Silent answer works like this:
On incoming call, modem goes online for about 1 second after the first
RING. If it doesn't detect fax CNG tone, it will click off line; wait a
few seconds, then click back on and listen for approx. 5 seconds. If it
hears CNG, it engages GPFax; if not, it leaves the call alone.
Do you have latest ROM's (1.8)? They are supposedly much improved in
their ability to recognize and respond to CNG tones. (ATi3)
The real problem seems to be the way various SENDING machines work. Some
don't transmit a tone UNTIL your phone is picked up. That's what makes
that second 5 second listen so critical (and the 2 or 3 second blank space
on your answering machine so important).
Or, a lot of senders wait till they hear a CNG on the answering phone
before transmitting their CNG. Silent Answer won't help you at all in
that situation!
My set up works, but sending from my office to my home (where GPFax
resides), it sometimes takes me two or 3 tries before it works. (I have
NOT upgraded my ROMs yet))

Gary,
The Supra guy on Modemvendor told me NOT to upgrade to the 1.8 ROMS. He
said the first set of upgrades, which I have, were better as was GPFAx
2.342. I still haven't got it to work but once! Go figure?

I have GPFax 2.243S, it works fine with Silent Answer and the 1.8 ROMS.
The Supra guy gave me a password to use with the Supra BBS that alowed me
to download this version.

I don't have the 1.8 ROMS & as I said they told me they weren't as good
for silent answer so I guess I'll have to go the modemvender & ask again.
I have trouble testing it because I live with a Luddite <G> who made me
take the Radio Shack switch off. Next time he goes out of town….

…O.K. got the 2 rings after the answer machine.
…The answering machine is in a different room on a seperate jack from
the modem.
The way mine appears to operate is to go online for 1 sec between each
ring, then pick up during the answer machine announcement 3 second
silence. It doesn't get the CNG for some reason, unless its just
something with the only two fax machines that tried to get though when I
was in silent answer mode. (Not having two independent phone lines makes
it hard for me to test it…)

So perhpaps its that the senders are not putting out the CNG tones right
away. I noticed on one I didn't detect ant with the speaker on. The
second sounded more like a data tone than the fax tone. So possibley
there is nothing wrong except that the right people aren't faxing me! :^}

You will need GPFax 2.343S. Version 2.232S only works about one out of
every ten times. I had a problem simular to what you have so I left a note
at the ModemVendor forum for the Sepra tec. asking for help. He sent me a
password to use on the Supra BBS, this allowed me to download Version
2.232S Now silent answer works fine for me.
