#DXF Import
7 messages in this thread
We are having trouble importing Autocad DXF files into 3dStudio at a 1:1 scale.
Is ther e an easy way to do this consistently?
This shouldn't be a problem if you don't change the units settings in 3DS
between importing data from one time to another. The only times I've had
problems were after creating geometry in 3DS and then importing DXF from ACAD
into the file (either metric or imperial). The key is to use the correct units
settings in 3DS. Beware, you can set these to meaningless combinations. If you
just keep updating meshes in 3DS with data from ACAD, they should be spatially
and "unitally" identical (keeping the UCS, origin, and units the same in ACAD,
and the units the same in 3DS).
Hope this helps. If not, drop me a line with more specifics…

Gary, thanks for your advice. We tried today to import a 10' square poly lin
Autocad. The units were set in 3dStudio to 1=1 foot. When measured the square
was 12 times larger or 120'. When we exported a 10' square measured in 3ds
to Autocad it came out 10" square. Any light you could shed on this would be
ver
much appreciated.
Thanks again, Bill exit
You need to set 3DS's units to INCHES! If you're using Architectural units in
ACAD (which you obviously are), units are inches. Or, if you really want to
use feet, you'll either have to scale down the geometry after importing, or
switch units in AutoCAD (like to decimal and then draw with the mindset that
one unit = 1' — as ACAD won't be calling units anything but arbitrary units).

It's not clear what your trouble is at this point. There are some limitations
and they can be found in the index undex .DXF files – loading, saving, merging,
tip. Please refer to 3-40 in your reference manual for a *must read* for anyone
doing dxf importing.
Also, it's unclear if this is r2 or r3 of 3ds. My page numbers are for r3 but
there is a similar section in the r2 manual.

Jonas,
thanks for your reply. We already figured it out. It was just a discrepancy
between "unit" settings in Autocad and 3ds. They both have to be in inches for
what we are doing, oh well…

Once you get it, it's pretty smooth. Most of the DXF problems relate to surface
normals, or polylines that aren't closed.
