Bad sector un-flag?

I'm looking for a way to un-flag bad sectors on my DOS boot partition. I have
PC Tools v7.0.
Six months ago, the July '93 version of WinNT malfunctioned several times on
reboot because of my improperly terminated SCSI bus, and its version of
'chkdsk' runs on start-up, and it marked some sectors as bad when they actually
aren't. I think this has eaten up several megs of hard disk space.
I realize that a format and restore will solve the problem, but I'd like to
avoid the risk and hassle.
If I engage in a format and restore, what do I need to worry about when it
comes to the WinNT boot loader? Can I safely enter WinNT, format the boot
partition, restore via WinNT Backup, and be on my way?

If your really REALLY confident and know what you are doing, you can use the
PC Shell disk editor to edit the FATs directly. PCTools v8 and v9 have a disk
editor that makes the job much easier, because that version of DiskEdit have
actual FAT viewers which are designed to do the task you describe. I haven't
had any access to WinNT, so I refer those questions to Microsoft.
(BTW, versions of Norton Utilites that were contemporary to PCTools v7 had a
disk editor similar to the one found in PCTools v8+.)
