John, If your really REALLY confident and know what you are doing, you can use the PC Shell disk editor to edit the FATs directly. PCTools v8 and v9 have a disk editor that makes the job much easier, because that version of DiskEdit have actual FAT viewers which are designed to do the task you describe. I haven't had any access to WinNT, so I refer those questions to Microsoft. (BTW, versions of Norton Utilites that were contemporary to PCTools v7 had a disk editor similar to the one found in PCTools v8+.)
