I just bought a used CDROM drive without documentation and need some help. This is the Sony 6201-10 sold by DAK. The interface card was removed from a working system with the seller claiming he made no changes to the default jumper settings originally. I have the installation disks but I can't get that far. When I place the card in my system it caused the hard drive to do some sort of continuous seek and fail to boot. I have a 386/20 w/AMI bios, an Adaptec RLL drive controller, an ATI VGA Wonder video card and a Soundblaster card installed and working which all seem pretty ordinary. There are three jumper block sets. Can anyone tell me what they're for? Anyone have any experience installing/troubleshooting this card? Karl

Looks like I end up talking to myself again. I still would like some help if any one out there has a clue or might have one of these drives and consider reading the manual a bit on my behalf. Thanks, Karl

On the other hand, maybe no one else out there has a drive like yours, so they couldn't help… Have you tried calling DAK?

Have YOU ever tried calling DAK? If you expect telephone support, don't buy from DAK. I've had auto dialers working for hours with no luck. I got through to them once but I still don't know how. They do have a BBS & a FAX line that may work better. I've run into a problem that I can't resolve so I'll try all three and see which is best. Jim

I, also, haven't been able to get through the busy signals (no autodialer unfortunately.) Would you please report back their fax and BBS numbers so I can try those avenues also? Karl

As a matter of fact I got a phone number via Email from Bryan/DAK who frequents the forum here but I haven't be able to get through. Before purchasing this drive I lurked in this forum awhile and noticed reports from quite a few people using the DAK CDROM. I was hoping someone of those would see my message here and respond. Karl

Karl dont worry about the one giving you a hassle – this forum was intended to give "help" when other channels dont work – did anybody hear of networking ? I have had problems with DAK in the past – havent had the guts to buer stuff from them. Remember, they are basically a clearinghouse with a verbose catalog – some great deals, however support from the manufacturer is almost non-existant and it is difficult to get it from DAK try hard. One other approach is go directly to the OEM. My Tandy CDROM was difficult to install and the drivers were 4 years old ( version 1.0 !!) I called Mitsumi Corp of America and got the latest drivers and an installation sheet that made sense. The point is that I believe that your CDROM is also OEM'd by Mitsumi. read the message bases about mitsumi and download the new drivers from this forum ( I uploaded them) While I am on the subject – Do other people have the same opinion of Tandy technical support as I do ( Lousy !!!) You read their poorly written and outdated manuals and they refer you to to a "computer" center where the sales people generally dont have the s [C [C [C slightest idea of what you are talking about

"Networking" is the reason I'm here. The DAK drive has a BSR label and is a Sony OEM drive. With no idea I just tried moving the jumpers around until I found a combination that would allow my computer to boot. Once booted I could run the DAK installation routine which told me how to set the jumpers. All this on the fourth try — I guess I got lucky. Thanks for the support, Karl

Is the video card the only 16 bit card in your system right now? If so, try setting your ATI card in 8 bit mode- it's part of one of the two software programs that comes with the ATI, it's been a year or so since I used mine, I disremember the names of the programs. -Bill

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried a few random settings on the card and got lucky, I guess. Once I could boot the system I was able to run the installation routine which had the jumper settings listed. Karl
