#Memoryproblem
5 messages in this thread
Hi all
I have 32 MB in my 486 /ISA PC installed, but 3DStudio only use the
first 16 MB. In the the system setup I hve explizit mentioned to use
the complett memory. Someone told me my ADAPTEC 1542C would limit
the memory to 16 MB in the ISA bus . Is it correct ? Any tip for me ?
thanx Tom

The Adeptec shouldn't have anything to do with the ram. In config.sys you may
need a line in your memory manager (emm386.sys or qemm.sys) that reads
emb=32768 in order to use more than 16 meg.
Hope that helps some.

Recalling from pure brain memory, I think that's just the SCSI's internal
addressings since your card is a bus-mastering type. (This was referenced off
the Adaptec EZ-SCSI 3.1 docs. Re-read it if you could) It seemed that your
motherboard doesn't like more than 16 Mb (?)
I have multiple PCs and only have that one antique ISA card installed as of
your and it works fine. There are absolutely no memory addressing problem.
As long as you're using HIMEM.SYS (or other stated in the Installation
booklet), it should address all of it with out a hitch.
The only problem I have w/ 3DSr4 is the avaibility to address more than 64 Mb
RAM! You then have to use QEMM 7.5 to utilize it.
Hello
Thanx for your answer. I can't explain it actually, but if I remove HIMEM.SYS
and EMM. SYS I can use all my installed memory (32MB) in 3DS4. I think this
behaviour depends in some aspect of the Pharlap Dos Extender. I don't know.
But it works now …
Bye Tom
Well, whatever it was it wasn't HIMEM. You should try putting that back in and
see if it still works. EMM is most likely the culprit. I try not to use EMM at
all unless I really need more conventional memory. Glad you can see all of your
RAM now though.
