#DCTV on A1200?

Am I correct in understanding that other than frame capture, the A1200 by
itself can already do most of the things that the DCTV added to older
Amigas? That is, there isn't much reason for a 1200 user to get a DCTV?

Ever since I got an AGA machine, I only use DCTV to digitize from my
Xapshot. And I used to use it all the time.
You can still benefit from DCTV on an AGA machine. E.g., if you use
Scenery Animator or VistaPro, you can render their animations to DCTV
format, and then play them back. The A1200 or A4000 will give you speedy
playback, the DCTV format gives you tightly compressed anim-file storage.
It'll look almost like the page-flipping AGA-mode anims that C= has
demo'd. Caligari-24 also uses DCTV and will run faster on an AGA machine,
even though you're not using the AGA modes.

To add to what others have said, if you are into animtion then DCTV is
still a nice addition. I use mine with my 4000. DCTV uses an analog "jpeg
like" compression algorythm. DCTV files are 10% to 20% that of ham8 file.
On my 4000 (18 megs) I can plan, render, and play shots that are 10, 15,
or even 30 seconds long using DCTV. That would be impossible using ham8,
even if I DID have software that could produce ham8 anims! Think of DCTV
as a poor man's real time "jpeg like" compression/decompression hardware
device. Then ther is the bonus of DCTV paint – one of the best paint
programs on the Amiga.
