Sorry to keep bugging you, but what are volumetric lighting effects?

They're light volumes in which shadows are cast.

3ds has this only all the volumes are conical, correct?

The effect volumetric lighting simulates is seen in real life when
there's enough atmosphere to "show" the light beam – spot lights at a
smokey rock concert is a perfect example. When an object, say the
musician, steps in the beam of light a shadow is cast down the
"volume" of the light cone. Raising an open hand up into the beam
would cause 5 "streaks" of shadow as the fingers encroach which form
into one broad streak as the hand raises higher. That's volumetric
lighting – rarely needed but definitely an impressive effect.

It's something we'd like to have all the time actually 🙂 Effects work is full
of explosions, smoke, lights etc.

So, do you think it would make a good wish for the wishlist (if it isn't
already there)?

I think it's already there, but I can't be sure. Doesn't hurt to repeat the
wish.
Hi Phillip, excellent description of volumetric lighting. Thanks. I guess
another good example would be underwater scenes in which shadows are cast
through the water by objects at the surface. Cool.
