They're light volumes in which shadows are cast. – G

The effect volumetric lighting simulates is seen in real life when there's enough atmosphere to "show" the light beam – spot lights at a smokey rock concert is a perfect example. When an object, say the musician, steps in the beam of light a shadow is cast down the "volume" of the light cone. Raising an open hand up into the beam would cause 5 "streaks" of shadow as the fingers encroach which form into one broad streak as the hand raises higher. That's volumetric lighting – rarely needed but definitely an impressive effect.

Phillip, >> That's volumetric lighting – rarely needed but definitely an impressive effect. << It's something we'd like to have all the time actually 🙂 Effects work is full of explosions, smoke, lights etc.

John, re: volumetric lighting >> So, do you think it would make a good wish for the wishlist (if it isn't already there)? << I think it's already there, but I can't be sure. Doesn't hurt to repeat the wish.

Hi Phillip, excellent description of volumetric lighting. Thanks. I guess another good example would be underwater scenes in which shadows are cast through the water by objects at the surface. Cool. -Tyler
