#Lockup when using shadow

I am working on an animation that is around 640 frames, and it renders fine when I render it without Shadows turned on, but when I turn Shadows on, it renders the scene fine until it gets to a specific mesh, then it just stops. I can't even toggle back and forth to view the rendering, I can't even escape, I have to hardboot. I have 32 megs, and I've been doing animation with 3D Studio for 3 years, but I haven't run into this problem until now. Any ideas? Thanks. -James Franssen

Hi James, << then it just stops. I can't even toggle back and forth to view the rendering, I can't even escape, >> I'm assuming that you're not paging so is there any chance that you're using ray traced shadows along with high vert/face count scene geometry? jonas[adesk]

>> is there any chance that you're using ray traced shadows along with high vert/face count scene geometry? << Yes, I am using ray traced shadows. Should I not be? The book states that ray-traced shadows take up less memory, but usually take longer to render if there are a large number of faces, but up to an hour longer? I will try to render it with shadow maps instead of ray-traced. Thanks for the suggestion. -James Franssen

Hi James, << but up to an hour longer? >> Sure 😉 or longer… I remember trying raytraced shadows out on the golden gate bridge mesh!..

Well, your suggestion worked as far as turning off the ray-tracing option to speed up the rendering, but now I am not getting any shadow from the object. I have tried different maps for the floor which the object is standing on, including the default, but I can't even see the spotlight outline on the floor behind the mesh. I have all the attributes set to give and receive shadows, but I am not getting any shadows. If I just use one light, the spot light, I can barely even see the floor, even though the mesh objects are fully illuminated and provide a distinctive edge where the spotlight falloff begins, but this is only evident on the mesh objects, not the floor. Yes, I have tried deleting and creating a new floor (using CREATE, BOX). I have also made sure the spotlight's target point extends beyond the floor. Thanks for suggestions. -James Franssen

The shadows work now. I don't know why, but they do. I haven't changed any attributes on any object, but they are working now. Oh well. Thanks again for your help! -James Franssen
