We solved some installation problems–IRQ problems in a Pentium 90 with lots of
cards: Monterey sound, Future Domain SCSi adapter. PAR, etc In case anyone has
a similar problem—briefly:
There are 4 ISA slots–old, standard, IRQs set on board.
There are 4 PCI slots–new, IRQs assigned at the slot. The PCI BIOS is
smart enough at boot time to allocate each slot to a free IRQ– but the NT
driver for cards like the Future Domain are not smart and need a fixed IRQ.
We assigned IRQ15 to the slot holding the controller card using BIOS set-up
advanced features ssecti features section at boot time. (The Ethernet was
re-assigned to IRQ11.)
Another hint-make sure if youy are using a modem that it is turned on before
you boot. The PCI bus assigns the otherwise free COM 2 IRQto something else,
like the IDE PCI controller. With the modem turned on, the modem is recognised
and nothing else is assigned. Otherwise you will show a conflict on COM 2,
whcih can be confusing.
So before you take out all those cards when installing NT, try this….. Chris
