I would like to find out the machine setup to be able to take AutoCAD R12 drawings to AutoSurf to 3D Studio. What are the memory requirements? Any special video card requirements? The plan is to take our 2-D drawings, convert them to 3-D, then render and animate them for presentation. We are just now entering the world of 3-D & animation, so ANY advice will be appreciated. The feeling is we need to start with a Pentium 100 Mhz or better. The choice of the above software is due to we are already using AutoCAD R12, and a partner company is willing to help us if we use the same software. ANY help will be welcome! Chuck Lambert

Chuck, The most important item in the new computer is the amount of RAM. 32 meg is a good starting point for most 3DS jobs and more is required for complex jobs with lots of lights/reflections/tranparent materials/etc. It goes without saying that a 1 gig HD is a minimum. Save some money for Plug-in software like Optimize on Yost disk # 7. Sometimes faces are flipped when coming from Acad and the meshes can be overly complex. Optimize helps both problems. What is it you do exactly? TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F0007MGHHH949B48

>>What is it you do exactly?<< I work for a furniture manufacturer in the Product Development Dept. We are betting that rendering/animation will help us to get more product that are hits with less cost. We also believe there will be numerous pluses outside Product Development. Chuck

>> We are betting that rendering/animation will help us << Chuck, I bet you're right.<g> I've had several people in 3DS training classes ask if there are render ready librarys from furniture manufacturers. Does your company plan on offering something like that, eventually? Some companies offer CAD libraries, but they are often difficult to use in 3DS. Thanks TedB -Ted Boardman !^NavFont01F000CMGJHGwMGyHH{98F2

Since we are still in the planning stages, I can not give you a definate answer to that question. I would hope that we will eventually. The main reason you can not get the libraries, is that the furniture industry as a hole is behind when it comes to technology. That has been my biggest problem with the furniture industry the 10 yrs. I have been in it. Chuck

Chuck: Lots of RAM (32mb's or more), don't settle for 100mhz get a 120mhz or a 133mhz pentium if they are out there yet. Are you running a network? If not, you'll want to investigate this as well because your animations can be distributed over as many computers as you have on your office network. R5 of 3DS will be an NT release so you'd be well advised to set yourself up for migration if you want to keep apace the Autodesk family of products. Bob

Why is Autodesk only going to support 3DS in the NT environment with its next release? Will the next release work with Windows 95 (since 95 is suppose to be some what compatible with NT)? Chuck

Chuck: /_______________________From your message________________________\\ Why is Autodesk only going to support 3DS in the NT environment with its next release? __________________________________________________________________ Autodesk has stated that they will continue to support r4 for some duration in the DOS environment to smooth the transition to NT. There is a file "3dnt.txt" in the library which gives some insights into the 'why' 3DS is going to move to NT. As far as Windows95 support not much is clear and comments are few from the official sources. I believe that there are those who have managed some successes with r4 and Windows95 but to be cautious I would not expect R5 to be compatible with Win95. Personally, I don't know that I'll ever run Windows95. I was hoping for a move to NT and my ship has come in. Bob
