Jamie, Hi it's me the VideoCube owner/DecAlpha,PVR,RP wanabe. Any luck yet on
posting those new benchmarks for RazorPro on NT? Just out of curiosity once it
is all available i.e.: Dec Alpha 300 system with Windows NT, DPS PVR, and
RazorPro how fast do you think a basic two layer effects will be, by this I
mean a simple one second/30 frame dissovle or wipe? near real time? real time?
how about something more complex a dve push or spin on? and how about something
real complex like 4 layers, perhaps 4 video boxes all crossing the screen at
the same time with drop shadows…..just curious! 🙂

We took our most complicated effect, the orientation effect which allows you
to adjust the rotation of an image in the X, Y and Z axes (amongst other
things)
and we applied it to a 640×480 image. I should explain that we have more than
one type of orientation effect and this one is the slow one. We spent 4 man
months
developing it and we made it as perfect as possible. It fully antialiases the
image
and field renders the result for perfect subpixel positioning and rotating.
Our other effects take nowhere near as long and the times should be taken as
an
indication of the improvement of speed rather than as how long something
takes.
I will perform some tests using the crossfade to find out how long it takes.
To put
it into perspective a crossfade on a Windows 3.1 machine normally takes 2
seconds.
Here are the figures:
All machines have 32 MB RAM.
Windows 3.1 Pentium 90 44secs
Windows NT Pentium 90 15secs
Windows NT DEC Alpha 150 MHz 7.5secs
Windows NT IBM PowerPC 7.5secs
Windows NT Aspen Alpine 275 MHz 4secs
More RAM will make things faster – higher clock speed has a significant
affect.

Thank you very much for sending me the benchmark tests, they were very
informative. The Aspen Alpine 275 really smokes! Just one question . . . was
the orientation effect you tested just a single frame placement…or was it a
dve type move with video, in other words was the top layer full frame video
then squeezed down in to xyz perspective? and if so how long of a duration was
the move from full frame to smaller?
I just ordered my Asus Dual Pentium 100 motherboard and hope to use it as a
test bed for primarily Razor Pro and a PVR. At this point I am very seriously
considering an Aspen Alpha system as the replacement for my tired old
VideoCube.
Do you think this would be a good idea….do you honestly believe I could use
an Aspen Apha 275, NT, RazorPro, and a PVR on a daily basis for editing both
short format (:30 spots) and long format (5-12 min. industrials) projects? And
if so do you want to buy my VideoCube for your non-linear museum? 🙂

Yep, that Aspen is a real smoker !
The timings I quoted were for a single frame of video.
Most DVE moves that we do are for 10 to 15 frames,
however when the image gets smaller it takes less time
to render so you probably will see a 15 frame DVE move
take about 7 times the times I quoted.
The Aspen gives you the power and Speed Razor gives
you the speed to edit at an extremely high rate.
We currently have a number of users who are using
the existing PAR setup on a Windows 3.1 machine for
broadcast work, and so I have no qualms in recommending
a machine which runs five times faster for daily editing
use.
