#3DS4 Workstation

Hi everyone,
I'm looking into purchasing some hardware in order to setup a company
that would create Videos for presentation purposes. Our input are paper plans
and ACAD plans, outputs would be 5 minute animated Video rendered with
3DStudio4. So far there are two of us and we both have similar setups (
486DX33,16Mb ram,850Mg HD, and 486DX2-80,8Mb ram,500Mb HD). While we feel this
is sufficient to draw in ACAD12 and 3DS4, it of course is unable to render
without putting our machines out of order for weeks. I would like to know what
users have tried and for hardware.
1) What are the best suited video cards?
2) Can we just get a (or a few) machines to do rendering full time?
3) If i get a few is pentium faster then 486DX100?
4) What about dual pentium machines, or a network of 486s?
5) I heard there is a network motherboard that you plug 486 or P. motherboards
in just like you plug a controller or video board in a normal machine. Would
that be better?
6) What kind of video output card do you need to send to VHS?
7) Does it take a special VHS machine?
We are looking at cutting turn around time on delivery and so far rendering
seems to be the slowest step.
Any good or bad experiences would be extremely helpfull in choosing my
hardware.

If you are going to add a few machines I would buy the fastest pentium machine
available 120mhz or 133mhz, whatever. Actually, I would buy a DEC box as you
can get them with dual processor motherboards which will accept another pentium
chip at a later date or can accept one DEC Alpha chip. I mention this because
3DS r5 will be an NT release and could take advantage of the additional cpu and
hopefully the Alpha chip. Also, you may not need to buy additional monitors,
keyboards or mice for your new workstations if all they are going to do is
render away. You could just use a switch box to control them (a few folks do
that here). To send animations to VHS I would suggest the DPS PAR or its soon
to be released successor the PVR. With these boards you would need nothing
better than a home VCR to record great video. I record to SVHS often but to
VHS all the time as well. The best part of the PAR/PVR board is the ability to
make an unlimited number of 1st generation top quality tapes as you can record
your animations in real time. For more info on the new PVR check the library
for the PERFAQ file (Perception Video Recorder).

I will definetly be looking into it, I guess a UPS is also manditory.
I just happend to find a thread in this forum confirming what you said in the
3D Studio section called "Dream Systems or dreaming".
Do you have an idea when the release of the DSP PVR card might happen?

For a PC I would have to say a definitive maybe. <G> You would only lose back
to your last save so its a judgement call on whether its worth it. Peace of
mind may tip the scales.

Actually, I thought the date that DPS was shooting for was today or
thereabouts.

Bob – You have a fair hardware setup for 2d CAD work, but if you are going
deeply into 3d, you're going to need more beef. Given your reference to paper
plans and ACAD plans, I am assuming that you will be preparing architectural
simulations.
The solution we like –
Massive rendering systems:
Modeling/rendering stations – Pentium 100, min. 32 Mb RAM, minimum 1+ Gb HD,
Matrox Impressions card w/4Mb RAM, minimum 17" monitor, DPS PAR + TBC IV +
RAZOR PRO (on one station only).
This station is networked to a series of rendering stations, which are fast
pentiums (min. 100 Mhz), with lots of RAM (64-128Mb), a minimum 500 Mb HD, and
a low-end VGA video card. To conserve space, these stations are rack mounted,
and share a single keyboard and monitor. Since they stations render to a file,
no advanced graphics cards are needed.
This type of configuration gets a lot of bang for your buck, you don't have
to buy all of it at one time (you can add to it station-by-station), and if any
one component goes down, you aren't SOL.
Dual pentiums are not yet a consideration, as 3dS and ACAD will not take full
advantage of their capabilities.
The DPS PAR card will compress your animations and play them back in
real-time, eliminating your need for a frame-accurate video tape deck (at least
for recording purposes). The TBC IV allows you to capture video from live
sources or a tape input through the PAR.When you need to do video editing, the
Razor Pro software will enable you to do effects and transitions between video
clips that have been captured to the hard drive using the PAR, and also
synchronise sound to your video.
The price differential between Pentiums and 486-100s has shrunken
significantly from where it once was, to the point where we really recommend
Pentiums to our clients that require processing power. Consider this – the
street price of a 100 Mhz Pentium mthrbd+CPU is only about $500 more than a
486-100, and you get approximately twice the number-crunching throughput.
We like the Matrox Impressions board for your type of application because of
the on-board rendering capability wih the 3d Dynaview software. Amoung other
things, this software does near-realtime rendering of your models within
AutoCAD. This gives you the ability to error-check your modeling quickly. Add
an inexpensive scan converter to your setup, and you could record walk-throughs
directly out to videotape for client approvals.
You're launching into a brave new world, and getting there is half the fun!

I agree with what you are suggesting and while talking it over with
friend they said, for the price get a Sun SparcStation. Since I
don't know much more about them I coudn't continue the conversation.

Who puts this together?
We do!

TOMORROW? My, how time flies. When we placed our initial order for stock back
in early May, the estimate for our delivery at that time was mid-July. DPS says
that they have really ramped up production due to the volume pre-release
orders. We'll see.

Look at the threads on this and on the ACAD forum, and you will find users at
both ends of the satisfaction spectrum, no matter which card you choose. I look
at the Impressions board from the modeling standpoint, and it fits a need –
error-checking my models without having to wait for my computer to render even
a simple scene. Add in an inexpensive scan converter like the AverKey, and I
can do d&d walkthroughs to videotape without foring up a renderer!

And, depending on whether 3dSr5 support SNMP, we may start switching to dual
Pentiums.

From my perspective, the SparcStation is an all-or-nothing solution that
entails much more expensive hardware and software than a PC-based solution.
There is no question that a RISC workstation will render much faster than a
Pentium PC, but the cost of growth in that world is measured in increments of
$3-4k, vs. $100s – $small 1Ks for PC solutions. And (heaven forbid), if your
workstation goes on the fritz, you are SOL. With a "rendering farm", you are
minorly impacted if one of your machines goes down, plus parts and repair
services are readily available and affordable. It's a matter of perspective,
resources, and production methodology.
I'd be interested in how you have connected all your rendering slaves
up to a single keyboard and monitor. We've been trying to do
something like that and all the switches we've seen so far seem
pretty expensive.
We have a local source here in San Diego that manufactures these switches for
us at a reasonable price. One box will connect 4 computers to a single monitor
and keyboard.
