Have been doing some flowers. Petals are one object and the center of the flower another object. The center is a made material. After applying the material and mapping it, when rendering it.the petals either all disappear or parts of them disappear. The mapping does not touch the petals as I have moved the center out and applied the material and mapping and moved it back, then checked the maping, all looks ok! Using 3ds V3. Sometimes the top left hand petals are there but no others. Most times the petals simply are not there. Rendering a FULL view. Any idea where they have gone? ….Thanks…………Jane

It sounds like the normals on the petals are pointing in the wrong direction. What happens if you set "force 2 sided " to on while rendering? What happens if you do a surface/normal/object unify? Turn on display/geometry/all lines while you are doing all of this so that you can see where individual faces actually are. You may see at that point which faces need their normal flipped. You may want to download a copy of optimiz.zip from libarary 1. This IPAS is for optimizing an object geometry. As a demo it won't save the optimized mesh, but it does show, interactively, the direction of the face normals. If all else fails, upload a petal or two along with a plea for help, and I'm sure someone will tell what you are doing wrong <g>. LAM

Thanks Larry, >>What happens if you do a surface/normal/object unify?>> Nothing different. Tried that first. <ugh> But I Found the problem and as you say it was NORMALS. When I cannot get something to work as I think I should..then Jane starts to Play! After playing with most of the pull downs…4 inch manual did not have in a quick way to find what to do, I found Surface/Normals/ Flip Object did the trick, To be sure that this was what did it, I only flipped a few petals..those appeared. I also found that I had to do this not only in the USER View but in the Front View..and a few groups of petals in the Top and Side view..Have NO Idea why flipping in the one view did not flip them in the other views. Still all seems to be rendering OK after that. My flowers now have all their petals :)! I started another flower as a test case. Rotated it in Top view checked the omni lights to be sure all was well. Only the center rendered. Petals gone. Flipping, Petals back. Thanks for helping………………………………….. Jane

<<After applying the material and mapping it, when rendering it.the petals either all disappear or parts of them disappear.>> How did you create the petals? With the 2D Shaper then using Create Object/Get Shape? If so then you'll need to use a 2 sided material since the petal will only have "one side". DaviD "la la, tip toe through the tulips"GouID

Hi David, Yes I did create it in the 2D shaper, but I also lofted it with the default path down to about nothing so they would have just a little depth to them. Did try simply bringing them into the 3d editor from the shaper but I did not like the what I called 'lack of depth', that may not be the correct term. They looked more like artificial flowers. The material is a variation on red plastic, a deeper red with a lot less shine that I thought look very close to the red roses in my yard. What I am trying to do is make a flower that looks like a flower. Well all is OK at the moment since I flipped the normals on the petals that did not show. I know I need more work on the WHOLE program. But I am learning. Tonight I was trying to use a flick from Animator as a background and somehow I clicked the .cub and I could not release it. I finally had to save the project and exit 3ds V3 and re-enter to elimate it making the .cub file. Hit the book but I could see no way to get back to rendering the fli with the 3ds stuff without it making a .cub file. When re-entering the progam I finally got it done, The background is not good. Did render at the .FLI resolution. Fli is '92 Autodesk Animator. I sure do wish there was a way to convert all the AA fli that I have done into 3DS besides materials, background and projectors. Guess we cannot have it all :). Thanks for the reply……………………….Jane in South Carolina

<<I sure do wish there was a way to convert all the AA fli that I have done into 3DS besides materials, background and projectors.>> I'm not 100% sure what you're wanting to do but Video Post is very powerful when it comes to manipulating existing animations. <<Guess we cannot have it all :).>> Who said so? <g> DaviD "Swinging with Jane" GouID
