I would like to see some form of raytracing for refractions and reflections. In some cases reflection maps are to slow, and can take considerably longer than a true raytraced scene. And of course faking it takes way to much thought and most of all time. thanx

<< wish.. >> got it.

If this Means Ray Tracing will finally be supported, you don't know how happy I'am. Finnaly I'll be able to forget about SGI allternatives and of course Ray Man, Wich has NO ANIMATION CAPABILATIES. Now If only you could give it one hell of a particle generation system. And PLEASE don't forget to consider NURBS as a powerful modeling alternative. Just make 3DS R5 even close to an ALIAS modler or renderer, and I'll be HAPPY FOR LIFE OR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF YEARS. Thanx again

Hi Chris, << ..If this Means.. >> my "got it" means that your wish has been received by Adesk and will get evaluated by the project development team (Yost Group). jonas[adesk]

Well, tell them I'd like ray-tracing too, and everything else Chris mentioned. The more 3DS 5 has, the easier it will be to bury lightwave and other competition even further down in the ground. Keep up the good work! Jason

I was afraid of that, oh well heres to wishing.

I just want to second (or third or fourth, as the case may be) the includion of some ray-tracing capabilities in r5. The value for stills ALONE would make it worth the inclusion. Right now, one must reply on other packages to go the one step further to attain the level that only true ray-tracing can bring. Having these features built into 3DS would not only save having to obtain another package to do high-level ray traced images, but would also save the time in converting the meshes and especially texturing information over to the other package. And hey – for those of us patient enough or with powerful enough computers to generate animations eith ray tracing, it would be there for us. I would think the only reason ray tracing wasn't part of the 3DS package in the past was that it was first built to runn on lower end 486's as opposed to dual pentiums and DEC alphas, which will be within the scope of r5. Think about it. It may not be as important as better modeling capabilities, and atuo mapping routines, but it certainly would be a precious thing to have! -jk

I just want to third (or fourth or fifth, as the case may be) the includion of some ray-tracing capabilities in r5. The lack of true ray tracing and refraction of glass objects is one of the major things 3ds lacks. If it were to be included as an option you could turn on or off for prelim. vs. final renderings it would triple the value of the package.

Hi Kenneth, <<.. the includion of some ray-tracing capabilities in r5… >> Thanks for your wish. <<.. …I just want to third (or fourth or fifth, as the case may be..>> Padding the polling box is not needed. 🙂 The Yost group reviews and evaluates each individual wish. jonas[adesk]

>>Padding the polling box is not needed. 🙂 The Yost group reviews and evaluates each individual wish. But – is not each reply to a wish in support of it a wish in itself…? I understand that each wish would be evaluated on its own merit, but I would think it's important to measure public support for any given idea, as both the insights of YG as well as the overwhelming needs of the public should be considered in the inclusion of new features. BTW – knowing that SIGGRAPH is ssoon coming, and the release of r5 will be soon after that (comparitively), is it too late for any major wishes like, for example, the inclusion of ray tracing, to be included in the next release? I assume the public opinion at SIGGRAPH will have at least some impact on the final descisions…

Hi Jerome, <<.. it's important to measure public support for any given idea, as both the insights of YG as well as the overwhelming needs of the public should be considered in the inclusion of new features… >> Gary keeps close to the pulse of the industry and with thousands of visitors to this forum yearly, we really don't encourage "I agree with that wish"..messages. <<..too late for wishes.. >> It's never to late. There's always the next version for wishes that don't make it into a given release. jonas[adesk]

>>It's never to late. There's always the next version for wishes that don't make it into a given release. I understand… that's why I never feel a wish is wasted. I just wonder if it's too late for major changes to THIS next version. There are some very important features I'd like to see in r5, if I'm going to be able to make full use of it this time around… Of course, I'm not exactly the only user with wishes out there 😉
