#PAR Backup Sftwr

All,
We have been unsuccessful backing up the PAR with our usual backup software
(the Backup Exec by Arcadia .. OEM'ed by Conner and Adaptec). The people a DPS
suggested that any Windows backup will not work well. They suggested CP-Backup
that comes with PC Tools .. but I don't really want to get PC tools for the
purpose.
Has anyone tried to use BackUp Exec for DOS (comes with the package) with any
success? What other packages do you use?

Hi Angelo,
What's worked for me is I export my PAR .ani files using the PAR DOS
software(1.50) off to my HD and then back off to DAT using Conner Back-up Exec.
It does work as I restored a PAR animation from my DAT yesterday and then
imported it to the PAR using the PAR DOS software. NO problems. No corruption.
Quality 23, Block size 240. I will optimize my PAR drive if it is somewhat full
whem I'm planning on importing an .ani file. I use a combination of RP1.0f and
Premiere 4.0 Win to get the transitions and effects I need. Hope this helps

We recently settled on Norton Backup for Windows (thanks to recommendation of
others here). Using a Sony 4mm DAT drive we've had no problems backing up,
verifying, and restoring directly to the PAR drive. This is a BIG help after
an 18 month long QUEST for a reliable backup solution.

DOS or Windows? DPS told me directly that Win prog's won't work.

Hmmm… now that's weird. The package my customer is using is Backup Exec
Basics .. that which comes with EasySCSI (Adaptec). They have been having
problems. What version are you using?

Back -up Exec by Conner. Maybe the 'Basic" bundled version is lacking some
needed features?

Were using Cheyenne's Arcserve and its been painful. It is supposed to do
everything imaginable but successes have been few.

I just copied back to my PAR drive an animation file which had 1900 frames. I
had copied the file directly from my PAR drive to our NOVELL server and then
back. The animation now has the legendary +896 frame frazzle. I believe that
the file was copied off of my PAR drive and back using the same version of the
PAR software 1.5. Can you (or anyone) confirm that the 896 frame limit no
longer is a problem? It could be that this particular .ani file was saved with
a previous version. Before I go saving any more large files I need to check
this out. Thanks.

I believe this has been fixed in 1.5. You must have backed it up with a
previous version. Too bad, its now gone! I haven't had any problems here.
Just did some restore a couple of weeks ago for some forum regulars that needed
me to output to beta and they were over the magic number.

Ouch, I suppose you are correct. I'm lucky that this file can easily be
re-rendered from frame 896, best crank up the NET QUEUE. Thanks for the
response even if it wasn't happy news. 🙁

Angelo, I'm using Central Point Backup for Windows with an Archive Python 4Gb
DAT drive with no problems. PAR directly to tape and back. Very fast and easy
to use. CP backup by itself is pretty inexpensive also.

I backup my ani's to my dos drive first. then I archive them to QIC-80 across
my network using Lantastic. I never had any problems. I have never tried
direct to the PAR drive as it is contrary to my mode of operation. I store my
animations on the dos drive freeing up PAR for active projects. The files stay
on the dos drive until the bill is paid and the project is officially finished.
I also have not had any problems restoring except during that one bug DPS had.
Been eliminated with r1.5
I use colorado backup and Arcadia XL series QIC-80
