#3DS slow on startup
8 messages in this thread
Hi,
I recently upgraded to Pentium 100 with two SCSI HD ( one is seagate and the
other is Quantum). I found that loading 3ds4 4 to 5 times slower than my
previous 486DX2 66.
Does anyone have any idea on this. It's very frustrating when i need to load
3ds to do some urgent work.
Thanks for any help.

What type of video card do and did you have? The ATI Mach64 series of cards
are very slow on initialization – this may be what you are seeing. If you are
using a Mach64, download ANTIVE.ZIP and run the enclosed TSR before starting
3ds to speed things up.

It might be your memory manager or a TSR that is causing the slow load time.
Try booting with only FILES and BUFFERS in your CONFIG.SYS and then start 3D
Studio. The problem should go away. Then put the lines back in one at a time
until you identify which is causing the probem.

Thanks Brian, I will try it and let you know the result.

It might also be the fact that for some incomprehensible reason, 3D Studio uses
the obsolete Phar Lap 386 DOS extender instead of one of the newer, faster, and
significantly cheaper (royalty-free) ones out there, such as FlashTek or
Rational. The Watcom compilers used to have the same problem under Phar Lap —
it would take several seconds just to get the compiler to run. Switching to
FlashTek fixed that in a hurry. It's truly weird that Autodesk still uses Phar
Lap 386.
I'll try ANTIVE.ZIP — it might help some, as I'm running a Mach 64 card as
well. But 3DS4 is still dog-slow starting up on a conventional Cirrus VGA!

Check for any "green" utilities such as POWER.EXE and try running your computer
without them. Also, post the name of your video card here. I remember hearing
about a few cases where cards took "forever" to switch graphics modes.
