I've heard rumors that the FFS has a serious bug that requires a major rewrite. Something about HD crashes that involve several partitions. According to the gossip on the local boards, the rewrite will slow the FFS down considerably. Given that 1.4 is following so close on the heels of 1.3, my unreliable source claims that 1.3 may never be released. Anybody out there have any SOLID info on this?

Hmmmm. Well, I'm using FFS in a system with two big hard drives… one has two partitions, one has three. All partitions are FFS. The bigger drive has 3 40mb partitions, and the smaller HD has 2 35mb partitions. No problems at all, except those caused by broken software, like WordPerfect… and of course, once you figure out _why_ such programs are trashing you, you stop using those features. For that matter, if they don't fix it before I finish this project, I'll probably format the WP disks – that's prefererable to formatting the HD even once. Anyway, I have had no system problems with FFS, and I've been running it since about the initial Gamma 4 release. I'm using Gamma 7 now, and will stay with it until (or should I say IF) 1.3 is actually released. From my point of view, there are no major problems, or even any minor ones that I've run into. –Ben–

Like I said, the rumors of problems with FFS were from questionable sources. I would hope that they are exagerated. I have been waiting with growing impatience for WB 1.3, even though the important (to me) improvements aren't expected until 1.4.

There are acknowledged bugs in the FFS Gammas which have been fixed in the Omega releases. Beware anything that does multiple quick directory updates without flushing through a bunch of data blocks in between, if you're still using the Gammas.

So far, I have not seen any problems at all. Perhaps someday 1.3 will be released. Maybe. And I won't have to worry about it anymore. –Ben–
