Nah… technology passed the ST by before it was even released. Incarnate in
the form of the Amiga. –Ben–
The ST is still somewhat of a viable product, especially compared to the IBMs
and C128Ds that are near its price range. But it's stuck – and won't be viable
for alot longer – and since it can't be fixed, it's gonna die..
Henry, even 8088 machines are viable products. You can buy Cyanide, too – but
you don't put it in your food, you know?
Quite an exaggeration – if you had to do real estate, optometry, accounting,
law-office billing, library work or any number of a hundred other specific
things, and didn't want to learn enough about a computer to fight yourself
through a database or programming language, an IBM is about the only way to go.
Also do to the current state of software, the ST does some really nice things
the Amiga cannot do (and vice versa) and is good for some people.
The only computer on the planet earth isn't the Amiga.
Yeah, if you're a user, you can buy an IBM and have a prepackaged solution to
your problems, and the odds are high that the package will include or require
an IBM. That doesn't make it good. And Henry, my car can do some really nice
things that the AMiga can't or doesn't currently do… it has a computer
running some of it, too… so what? If I _have_ to go to the store, I buy a
car, not a computer. If I have to do real estate, I buy a "box" that does real
estate.
If I want a computer that is somewhere near state of the art, technically
sophisticated (as opposed to complicated and constipated like an IBM), can do
fairly nice graphics at reasonable speeds, good sound internally, midi, cad,
telecom, multitasking, windowing, cli'ing, then there's only one choice left.
And we havn't even got into the details. TO quote from Gov. Tarkin:
"Your sad devotion to that ancient (force) is (paraphased) useless"
Henry, the ST is a minimal desing. The IBM is WORSE than junk. The ONLY
computer out there that even approaches the Amiga is the Big MAC machine with
the 020 in it. You talk about progress, Henry.. then you pump up the IBM
machines. You're doing everyone who hears you and believes that drivel a MAJOR
disservice. Sure, there are IBM solutions. but we (you, everyone) should be
working to get AWAY from that technological pile of bear skins and stone axes.

If you choose to call the real-estate "box" that does real estate software for
fictional John James, who'se 28 years old and needs something to do it right
now, then fine – but nevertheless he's got a computer that's going to do what
he needs it to do – and that's what computers are in the bottom line, tools.
I think you are doing a major disservice by spouting computer-brand rhetoric,
instead of allowing and encourage people to educate themselves about what a
computer can and cannot do and letting them choose for themselves (giving
guided opinions, of course). You can't play the ostrich-approach, pull down
the shades, and heard people to do what you want them to do, it just doesn't
work. You have to let them know through education and letting the
"unfortunate" facts fall through as well – and the "unfortunate" facts are (due
to the state of software only) that the IBM computers will "get the job done"
in many situations where an Amiga will not.
