From my personel experience, plus by talking with other people, I can tell you
that the average access speed is barely felt when using a drive, compared to
changing the interleave or media type. Our 20M (65ms 1:1 MFM) and a previous
30M(65ms 1:1 RLL via Omti 3527) were dramatically different. On the ST, the 20M
was transfering at 250K/sec, the 30M 550K/sec. I had alot of people call me
who had upgraded to the 20M, marveling about the speed of the drive!
Plus, take a look at the latest Byte article on fast 40M hard drives. The hard
drive with the best performance had the worst average access time, but it was
running RLL. They only had 3 RLL hard drives, they came in 1,2 and 4 place in
their rankings!
