Yahooo! I finally got my StarBoard2 in the mail today. When it arrived I
hopped around the room to the theme music in Zoom!
I am curious about the success (or lack thereof) of the JDDisk software,
especially in comparison with VD0:. Does it appear to be as solid and safe
from reboots as VD0:? MicroBotics seems to think so, but that doesn't surprise
me. 🙂
Also anyone got any cheap RAM to add to it? 🙂

I've been running with JD0: instead of VD0: for months, ever since I had
some problems with that "funny" area of 500/2000 memory, $C00000. I even have
a "assign VD0: JD0:" in my startup to get rid of those little compatibility
"gotchas".
My experience with the software has been 100% positive. The best thing I
can say about it is that it has become completely transparent. I use it all
the time, yet give it no thought at all.

What is JD0:? I've heard of VD0: and VK0:; is JD0: another recoverable RAM
disk?

JD0: is a Recoverable RamDisk written by Joanne Dow. I have never Seen It.

JD0: is for the owners of the StarBoard2 from MicroBotics – it comes packaged
with the MultiFunction module, though I don't know why they do that. They
should package it with the StarBoard2 itself.
Henry, does that mean that I won't get JD0: with my Starboard that I just
ordered?? I was going to get the multi-function module (mainly because of the
clock – I don't plan on buying a math co-processor), but then I decided to buy
the SCSI interface because it also has the clock, and I do plan to eventually
buy a hard disk, and the SCSI module was only about $30 more. Also, from what
I've read, you cannot connect the SCSI module AND the multifunction module to
the Starboard2 together – it's one or the other; so I went with the SCSI. But I
_do_ want JD0: !

I don't believe you're going to get JD0: unless it comes with the SCSI. I
don't know why they package it like that – I don't think JD0: relies on the
multifunction for anything. You may want to give them a call.
I decided _not_ to use JD0: because it REQUIRES an 80K minimum, while VD0:
does not. That's too much with 1 meg of RAM right now.
I also decided not to get the multifunction module because it sounds a bit
kludgy to me. I dunno. I'm still having second thoughts though, and may
indeed sell the Multifunction for the SCSI.

JD0: is included when you get either StarDrive SCSI Module, or Multi-Function
Module. JD0: is an all software, variable size recoverable ram disk.
I have the StarBoard2 w/SCSI inside my A-2000, but I have never even used the
JD0:, but rather VD0:, ASDG's version of the same. Why? Personal preference I
guess.
By the way, C-A has their own recoverable ram disk (RAD:) which is scheduled to
be included with AmigaDOS 1.3 release.

Good – plus JD0: came with the StarBoard (don't have to cough up more $ for
it.) And the "assign VD0: JD0:" is a great idea I wouldn't have thought of.

Henry, I just ordered a Starboard 2 from Abel Supply. I got 512k on it. Can't
wait for it come in!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Can't take compiling in 512k anymore 🙂 Abel
told me they could give me chips for $10! $160 for 512k. Unfortunately, cash is
a little short right now, so I had to settle for a total of 1 meg. That's the
lowest price I've heard lately. So how do you like the board?? From the

I have been a StarBoard2 user since January of 1987, and could not live without
it. I bought it fully populated (2 megs of ram), but RAM chips were priced at
a more reasonable level then) and it lived with my A-1000 quite happily.
I then bought I C LTD drive and SCSI interface, which plugged into the
StarBoard. No problems there either. However, my Amiga's PAL chips started
getting flaky, but I fixed that by re-grounding them to each other.
Then I sold my A-1000 and got a A-2000. But no way was I going to let my
StarBoard go! SO the *FIRST* thing I did was get an adapter from Microbotics
to use the de-cased StarBoard inside my A-2000, as well as SCSI module for the
StarBoard. Installed everything pretty quick, and now I have a nice set-up.
Only wish the logic board of the Hard Drive was smaller, so I could mount it
internally. Now it lives next door to the Amiga.
The point of this message is… You made a good choice going with a StarBoard.
Microbotics has a capable and friendly Customer Support department, and their
products work, as advertised, without fail.

I'm VERY happy with my StarBoard2/MultiFunction module combinaion – it
snapped right in and works fine. Plus, with an additional few $ it will work
with a 2000 – you don't have to discard it and start from scratch at first,
though I figure eventually in the distant future most people would – because
they'd want an 8 meg board that takes up 1 and only 1 slot. But, that's so far
in the distant future it doesn't bother me currently at all.
Another nice thing is that the multifunction module's support for a math
coprocessor is exactly the way that Commodore modelled WorkBench 1.3's support
for the match coprocessor – at least that's what MicroBotics says.
The documentation is pretty well-done, though the way that it's printed (on
a glossy piece of paper that folds open) is less than desirable.
